I like to Thanks in public Patrick Stoddard for his dedication as a satellite
operator and for this great Gridxpeditions from him that allow me to log a
bunch of grids I worked 13 of the 14 grids he visited on his July trip and
also last week on DM54 and 55.
as a relatively new satellite use I'm so glad there is people like Patrick
WD9EWK, John K8YSE, and his son KD8CA0 Douglas, that helped me log new grids
and inspire me to keep going on.
Thanks all of you people for your support!!!!!
73's from KI6YAA Larry

Hi Larry and the group,

Patrick's cards arrive here today as well. Actually the mailbox was quite
full and happy with a total of 8 new grids confirmed, 6 from Patrick alone.
Kudos to K8YSE, KD8CAO, ND9M and numerous others who've attributed to
helping an addiction.....satellite VUCC. :)

I would also like to pass along my thanks in Patrick's efforts and do
appreciate all that he has done and is doing to promote the addiction of
operating satellites. Also, congrat's on making W.A.S. via satellites.

To all:

Wow! What a day. First 8 grids confirmed. Now, just come to find out that
the 7O1YGF DXpedition by German nationals waaaaaaay back in April 2000 will
finally count for DXCC. So anybody on the -BB that has worked 7O1YGF and
received confirmation, the QSL will now count!

Ditto from Memphis,

Patrick made a special effort to get my new grids to me
today so I could turn in another batch this weekend at
the Huntsville, AL Hamfest.

Great Job Patrick!

73 and Thanks again,

Is anyone on the list using a Yaesu FT897 or FT857 on the LEO satellites (both
FM and SSB)? I am currently using an Icom 706MKIIG with pretty good results,
but have been thinking about "upgrading" to a Yaesu FT897D or maybe a FT857D.
I have used some Yaesu rigs on the sats before and the 706MKIIG seems to hear
them better, especially AO27.

I don't have a big setup-Cushcraft dualband yagi (5 elements on each band)
with no elevation, so signals are not rockcrushing from the satellites. The
QST reviews show that the Icom has better sensitivity on 70cm SSB (MDS of -143
vs -139 dbm) and on FM (.16 vs .21 microvolts) but are those differences
really meaningful? Do the 897 and 857 still receive the sats really good with
a minimal setup?

The only problem using Polaris, or most any star for that matter, is that the
only time you're going to see it is when it's too dark to go climbing up the
roof or tower to adjust the antenna. I use the one star that is always
visible during the day, the Sun. Most satellite tracking programs can tell
you where the sun is (Az/El), or you can look it up on-line. Aim the rotor
controller to those coordinates, and then adjust the antenna so the shadow
falls directly down the antenna boom. Done. I find it's best done later in
the afternoon, when the Sun is closer to the horizon, but any time will do
except when it's directly overhead.

And, with most practical 2m/70cm antenna systems, this adjustment doesn't need
to be up to NASA standards. As I am sure you know, hand-holding the Elk,
anywhere in the general direction of North works pretty well in practice.

The R.F. Connection.? They advertise in the AMSAT Journal.? I have purchased
many connectors from them.? Never a problem, reasonable prices.

Eric,

What 'flavor' (version of Linux are you running?

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 amd64 here.

I run the following:
FLDIGI - psk
gMFSK - psk
Gnome PREDICT - Satellite Tracking
WSJT - Meteor scatter/EME
xLog - Logging for VHF+ contests
GRIG - Radio control - Icom IC-820/910/275h/575h/1275/375h

I have also had luck in running a few program (Propnet, Echolink,
MMSSTV) under Wine. Wine seems to have matured at least under Ubuntu
as I have not had luck in the past configuring it correctly. I have
not tried HRD yet as I don't need all that function yet.

How about aiming for maximum receiver noise? That should be even more
accurate.
