The article link is slightly outdated, SumbandilaSat has been in Baikonur for
quite some time now.
Amsat numbers are usually only allocated once the bird has been succesfully
activated on the ham frequencies. I would personlally vote for an SO-xx
number for SumbandilaSat Oscar-xx, this would also link back to SO-35 which
led the way for SumbandilaSat.

Hi Patrick, first like the others, I would like to thank you for
helping me out tremendously in achieving VUCC on satellites, even
though I still haven't contacted a card checker to actually get the
award.
For me though, the way things are, it looks like I'll be able to work
the 49 states, but Hawaii is impossible at this time due to my
location in south Florida.
One thing that concerns me is what in the world do you plan to do when
you retire? I don't know your age, but at this rate, I think you will
have seen just about every grid in the states. I think you once told
me you knew another language or two, other than Spanish - you might
have to learn Chinese so you can retire over there. After all, they
have a huge country, and a lot of grids!
I'm still waiting to get back on the birds once Yaesu tells me what's
wrong with my rotors. It's gone back and forth from Florida to
California several times already. Counting the distance of the
satellite contacts, and the distance the post office has taken that
thing from coast to coast, could be a new record - someone should
create the 'MMR Award", most miles rotor award.

Thanks, and also thanks to the others who posted here and sent
me directly messages congratulating me on this award.
I'm with you... I could apply for VUCC, but have been putting it off
for some time. First it was "I'm over 100 grids confirmed, I'll wait
until I reach 125 to apply". Then I decided to wait until I reached
150, 200, 250, and now I think I will wait to reach 300 grids
confirmed before applying. No matter when I do that, it will be a
fair amount of work to get the cards sorted and then listed on the
paperwork - followed by finding a card checker with little or nothing
to do on a Saturday. :-)

For many east of the Rockies, AO-7 would be - and has been - the only
way to get Hawaii via satellite.

Retirement is not on the radar right now. As for visiting all the grids in
the
US, I think there are a few who are way ahead of me (N5AFV and WI7P,
ex-N7SFI, are certainly well out in front there).
Hope to hear you on again, soon.

Hi Rafael!
> Congratulations for WAS Award, I know for sure how difficult it

Geography aside, a WAS award is much harder to achieve on any
band than awards like DXCC or VUCC. You can get DXCC with
100 of the 338 entities on that list, or VUCC with 100 of the many
hundreds of grids in the footprints of the various satellites, but WAS
requires all 50 states (or substituting Washington DC for Maryland).
There still needs to be someone on from each state when you're on
the air to make that happen. And don't forget the matter of getting
cards for each of those states.
> And is great to know that you could get it, since you have helped so

I've gotten many grids confirmed thanks to operators like you and our
friend XE2AT through travels around Mexico. If I am getting new grids
from the XE side of the border, the least I can do is try to help with the
grids up here for all of you searching for new grids. The lower fuel
prices this year helped me make my decision to drive further last month
than I did in July 2008.
> I hope to be hear you soon in the satellites....
Maybe you can make the short drive south from Nogales on some
Saturday or Sunday to put grid DM40 on the air? The DM40/DM41
boundary is about 40km or so south of the border, and Imuris is 70km
south of the border (a good place to set up, off the main highway). I
don't think there are many good places near the highway where you
can stop on the DM40/DM41 boundary and have a good view of the
sky for working satellites. I know there are still many up here that would
appreciate DM40 being on the air, despite the efforts of others who
have worked from there over the past few years. Or maybe we can put
together a plan for some weekend this fall or winter from DM40?

I have downloaded and configured Willow and Sabins to receive and decode the
telemetry from AO-51.Anyone has the information of the IP address of the
telemetry reflector to be setup in Sabins.

I would think that DXCC would be next to impossible to achieve on the LEO
satellites.

This site:
http://radio.linux.org.au/
is the best I've found for Linux Amateur radio applications.
There's quite a few logging programs, but I don't think there's anything quite
as "All-In-One" as HRD for Linux.

Hi there,
I?m searching replacement for my old icom ic-w32e to use with my arrow
antenna for the fm sats.
I would like to know your opinions about what can be the best walkie with
full duplex operation to work these birds.
Any comment/suggestion is welcome!

There is nothing currently better than you already have.

Hi Simon,
Gunter's Space Page lists the primary payload, Meteor-M 1, as going into an
830 km orbit.
I'm guessing SumbandilaSat will end up in a similar orbit as I'm not aware
that the launcher in question is capable of doing multi-drop of the payloads
into different orbits.
SumbandilaSat was originally scheduled to be launched from a submarine
platform, this may be the source of the 500 km figure quoted, but the launch
vehicle changed.
Unfortunately I've no definative information on SumbandilaSat's intended
orbit.
Quoted design lifetimes are usually meaningless. For experimental systems it
just means the time required to complete the primary experiment. For many
satellites it's quoted as 3 or 6 months, but systems may continue to operate
for many years after the primary objective has been completed.
