Keps is in Italy and has no US distributor that I know of so be prepared to
pay a pretty price since we have such a weak dollar at the moment. I chanced
upon a Pacific Monolithics MMDS converter on e-bay awhile back but I haven't
used it yet. The particular one I have has an 123MHz IF. The surplus ones
are a little hard to find, you have to be ready to pounce when you see one.
I think someone already mentioned it but downeast microwave is another
option.

I just got the Icom AG-35 to use with my IC-820H. It's a bit cheaper than
the ARR and SSB electronics units and handles 100 watts. I know that it
doesn't have as good a noise figure as the ARR and SSB electronic units but
I couldn't afford them and I got the Icom at a discount from a ham store I
used to work for. I used to have an ARR 160 rated watt mast mount and sold
it when I sold my TS-2000X. I'm just now about to install the AG-35 so I
hope it helps. One things for sure, it's tough sledding without a preamp on
70cm.

or suggest a differnt affordable preamp? I looked at the ARR switched models
already. The high powerd mast mount is too much $$ and the low power one
only handles 25 watts. I could easily smoke that one out of stupidity as
well (my rig can do 50 watts).

Made first QSO on AO-16 today with VA7VW, who I had worked on FM birds... I
wasn't going to make a QSO,,, but... heard the satellite fine, thought, well,
I will just see if I can find my signal,,, put out my call and VA7VW returned
a call! Thanks VA7VW,,,? Now I am hooked on AO16! Loved the long pass, long
QSO capability, no fading, it was great.

Had my first QSO on AO7 (and across the pond as well) with Joe, K3SZH in
PA at 10.24z. I was just on the edge of the footprint at 0.56 degrees
elevation when I got him! No-one else on so relatively easy and even
more satisfying that I did it on a vertical!

All,
I've updated the laptop.org Wiki page with locations to download the
packages I'm using on the XO. I had a bit of a delay because I tried to
update to one of the Joyride builds and it toasted the data on my SD
card. I lost all my work. So, with that out of the way, here are the
links:
http://n2kiq.dyndns.org.nyud.net/xoaprs/
http://n2kiq.dyndns.org/xoaprs/
If you can, please use the Coral network to get a faster download speed.
I'm also looking for help getting Thomas Saylor's soundmodem package to
work with Alsa and a 2.6 kernel. It builds and runs fine until it goes
to actually do something with the sound card. This problem isn't
specific to the XO, it's just keeping me from using it and another
system the way I want to.
Thanks all & 73!

Hi!
In addition to the plans to operate from DM34, DM35, and DM45
tomorrow (Saturday, 19 April 2008):
http://amsat.org/pipermail/amsat-bb/2008-April/010638.html
I will be on the air earlier on Saturday morning from the
DM34/DM44 line east of Prescott. I will go to the spot I've
used previously to be in both of these grids simultaneously,
near I-17 and Arizona route 169 south of Camp Verde AZ, for
the AO-51 pass starting at 1410 UTC. This pass will favor
eastern North America, and will be the only time I will operate
from DM44 tomorrow. Then I will head to Prescott, for the
demonstration on the next AO-51 pass at 1548 UTC to the west.
I have been on from DM44 during many weekends in the past few
months. Although this grid does not see much activity besides
my trips, it has seen much more than DM35 - the main target of
my travels tomorrow - and DM45. There will be other times for
DM44, if anyone needs that grid via satellite. During the
upcoming summer, I should be able to put DM45 and/or DM35 on
the satellites occasionally as I escape the heat. :-)

Hi Guys,
Well this happens until you modify your set up to prevent it. Luc is
taking the best approach with the FT-847 (which is simple to do...and
almost easy depending on your skill level with a solder iron and hand
drill). I modified my FT-847 about 4-5 years ago and have no preamp
"smokes" since. Other models of radios may or may not be easy to
modify for separate Rx antenna connector. I have planned to put a
short article on my website showing how to modify the FT-847 (google
DL4MEA for a good webpage showing how).
Instead of pruchasing an expensive RF switched preamp, you could get
a coax relay to place in front of your preamp so that it switches to
bypass in transmit. You need a second relay to place after the
preamp if still using a single coax feedline. Surplus relays can be
found at hamfest for as little as $10.
It is pretty inexpensive to run a dedicated receive coax out of the
preamp to your radio. You can use RG-58 since the preamp gain
offsets any coax losses (assuming a reasonable run of no more than
150-feet). I use better coax on my eme receive line but then I am
trying to squeeze out every 0.1 of a dB for moonbounce. The P144VGA
or P432VGA preamps only cost $79.95. You can replace the Gasfet in
them if you are skilled at surface-mount technique, or maybe find a
local ham that is. The MGF-1302 GasFet costs about $5. ARR does
repair but I do not know what they charge.

I just worked XE83IARU- special station and callsign- on VO52. I was unable
to determine from the 'net if this is just one or multiple stations.
Apparently it is operating April 18-20 in celebration of the 83rd anniversary
of the International Amateur Radio Union. Good signal, seemed doppler
controlled.

Yes, there are several easy ways to improve the antenna system, I just went
through the same thing, and got tired of having to go out in the back yard.
1. Use the arrow antenna, but as everyone says, be careful not to go over? the
ten watt? duplexer limit.
2. Obtain- buy-build a simple 2meter beam,5- 7 elements, and obtain a small
432 beam...11 elements?? Something like that.? Use those with your? U-100
elevation rotor, it will work fine, and better than the Arrow, I imagine.? Not
sure what rig you want to use, but you? will have to decide? whether to use
two feedlines, or one with a duplexer. Depends on the rig I guess.
?I would not go too big on the antennas, you dont want such a narrow angle?
that you have to constantly tweak the beams.? I went from an elk? (similar to
the Arrow) to 7 elements on 144 and 10 elements on 432,,, BIG difference in
what I hear, and l how long I hear? passes. And, I mounted mine on a small
tripod on the roof of my house... even that helped, not having houses or trees
in the way of the low elevation passes.
Circular polarization is nice, you may decide to make that upgrade as well
someday, but not necessary, mount one vertically one horizontally, or maybe
mount them both at 45 degree angle...I think you will be amazed at the
improvement.
I'm no expert, by any means, but just went through the same process you are
going through. Nice to be in the house.

I have a few downconverters that I could part with. Same model, same price as
K5GNA, with N-connector, power supply/bias-T, with LO xtal for 2 metre
operation.
