I would like to ask the group what there thoughts are on Pre Amps?
I'd like to go with an amp that is mast mounted and can handle some power
through it.(auto Switching)
I have the antenna system down right for some mods and with the sale of some
other toys I have saved up for a good one.
What are you using or would your recommend?
Thanks

Hi!
I will drive to eastern Arizona for the afternoon/early evening
of Saturday, 8 August 2009, and plan to work FM satellite passes
from the DM54/DM55 grid boundary in Apache County. I should be
able to work AO-27 passes at 2046 and 2227 UTC, an AO-51 pass at
0041 UTC, and an SO-50 pass at 0134 UTC. Local surroundings will
determine if I can work an earlier AO-51 pass at 2306 UTC. If I
feel like staying out there into the evening, and if the western
view from there is not obstructed with lots of hills and mountains,
I *might* work the later AO-51 and SO-50 passes from there. No
guarantees for those passes (AO-51 @ 0223 UTC, SO-50 @ 0315 UTC).
As with other recent road trips, there is no need to first send me
a QSL card to get one for a DM54/DM55 QSO. Please e-mail me
directly with QSO details, and - if you're in the log - I will send
a card your way. For those who worked me last month on my 3-state
14-grid road trip, I will hold off mailing those cards out until
next week. This will let me put a DM54/DM55 QSL card in the same
envelope, if I work you out there on Saturday.

Hi AMSATs,
Everything has been prepared for the Ham Fair in Tokyo, so I got some time to
make some new video demonstrations of my tinny transponder. On the AMSAT-BB I
see some interresting articles about launch options, will see what the future
brings. I am looking for something smaller than 1U cubesat, I worder if that
can be done.
In the following video I show my transponder design in a CubeSat model that I
made from transparent plastic glas.
http://www.youtube.com/user/pe1rah#play/all/uploads-all/1/WTeHP6j75X4
The transponder only takes a small amount of volume, and might fit in most
CubeSat experiment satellites.
Another option is to put one in a half CubeSat-structure. I don't know if
there are also quarter Cube structures ??
Maybe it can reduce costs. Or have 4 in space for the price of 1U Cube...
Because the transponder and its connections are very small I made a Demoboard
for easy testing and using.
In my second video I give a demostration of this Demoboard, on which the
transponder can be placed and connected.
http://www.youtube.com/user/pe1rah#play/all/uploads-all/0/hy56TPVGTuQ
The Demoboard has an onboard 3.7V regulator which allows input voltages from
5V up to 15Vdc, which can be done in the way of a small supply adapter. The RF
connections are all SMA, for easy testing and easy using.
In case of terresterial use where weight is no problem (E.g on top of
mountain) the Demoboard can be used as well. On the SMA 2m output a linear
power amplifier can be connected to boost up the RF power. The 200mW output of
the transponder is enough to drive E.g the 2m all mode Mitsubishi M57713 power
module, giving you almost 20W RF power.
The Demoboard I will demonstrate at the Ham Fair in Tokyo.
There the ham people can see it is not an hot air castle but real working
hardware.
Enjoy ham radio,
Hope to meet you at the Ham Fair in Tokyo,
73 de PE1RAH, William Leijenaar

I'm surprised no-one else has done the math on this. The website says
they'll launch 30 tubesats on a flight. 30 x eight grand comes out just
under a quarter million US dollars - and they say this will cover *all*
associated services as well as the launch. I find it rather hard to
believe that even the launch vehicle would only cost US$240K per flight.

30 x 0.75 kg is almost no payload.
Presumably the rest of the cost is covered by a primary payload or lager
better more expensive TubeSats.
If their idea for frequency allocation is typical of the rest of their
planning, I suspect this is just vopourware which will never fly.

Hello list,
What measure would you recommend to avoid statics building up on helix
antennas?
Several suggestions have been given, both here and as PM. Thank you to you
all! Here is a summary of the mails received:
Answer 1: Try a grounded radome to keep rain and air movements off the
antenna. (G8IFF/W8IFF)
Answer 2: The shorted quarter-wave coax line suggested in the ARRL Handbook
2008 and 2009 pages 23.20-21 will work great because it is a short circuit
for the static electricity and a theoretically infinite impedance at the
resonant frequency so that for the RF input signal it is completely ignored
by the input stage of a converter or preamplifier. If you enlarge a shorted
quarter-wave by any even or odd number of 1/2 wavelenght of coax line thing
do not changes because a 1/2 wavelenght of transmission line represents a
full turn of the Smith Chart. Do it as suggested by the Handbook! (I8CVS)
Answer 3: Can I suggest: a) A 47k resistor across the input of your
converter. The static will have a very high impedance and I've found 47k
will remove it without increasing the noise figure of your converter. b) For
really severe cases: An inductor to ground. An 0805 or smaller device.
Something that presents a couple of Kohms at the frequency of interest would
be OK. Or perhaps a high pass filter designed for 50 ohms with an inductor
to ground. Cut off frequency at 30% lower than 23 or 13cms (G0MRF).
Answer 4: An earlier version of the ARRL handbook has a multi turn helical
for 23cms with the usual quarter wave strip of brass soldered to the first
quarter
turn of the helix. For static protection it has about 2cm of wire wound
around a former to make about half of a turn. This is soldered to the pin of
the N connector and
grounded. I can send you a picture later today. Done.(G7HIA)

Hi guys .. I managed to get a few packets of telemetry data from Pollux

Not to mention a whole lot of ISS packet activity ..
Where do I submit this data ?? On the website? or FTP it somewhere?
Still new to all this, but eager to learn.

I've had the same problem. Can look at one or ALL.
ALL overloads the processor and the program stalls.

Hello everyone. It's time once again for the Hudson Valley Satcom Group Net
on
Echolink node N2EYH-L or on the Mt. Beacon repeater overlooking Beacon New
York on 146.970 PL 100. My apologies to anyone who tried to connect by
Echolink during our last net. Due to technical difficulties we were not able
to
connect with Echolink. I have been assured we will be connected tonight.
Please join us and share your satellite communications knowledge with the
group.
Hope to hear you there.

Hi,
I guess it's something I've never really tried - will do so and fix.

Thanks Simon.
I guess it just stalls under the load. The windows title bar says "not
responding"
trying to close the program gives the familiar "program not responding" dialog
box.
Leave the computer for a bit and it eventually resumes tracking until any key
is pressed then stalls again.
I realise that simultaneously tracking 85 satellites is of little use but
other programs seem to manage it.

Simon and all,
I have been using V 4.1 Beta for a few months, and my sense is that all of the
multitasking HRD requires is taxing the processor on my Acer Aspire One
netbook beyond its capacity. I may be wrong about that, but I suspect that's
what's going on.
Simon, please correct me if this is wrong - but I believe that V 4.1 (beta)
requires that radios be connected to the main HRD suite, and then also
connected to the Satellite Tracker, in order to provide computer control for
Doppler tuning. If that is, indeed, the case, I wonder whether it's possible
to enable Satellite Tracker's radio-related functions without connection to
HRD? I suspect that if I was able to connect my radios directly to Satellite
Tracker without using HRD, that the netbook might be able handle the load.
I enjoy Satellite Tracker very much, but it has locked up my computer at the
very worst of times (e.g., just a few seconds before acquisition of AO-7 when
I had a schedule with EA8AVI in an attempt to add Africa to my continents-
worked list). I chose the netbook for my ham radio use because of its size,
and because it was bundled with Windows XP, not Vista. I fear that the
decision has me comitted to a computer with a processor that may not have
enough muscle to do everything HRD/Satellite Tracker asks it to do.
Regardless ... thank you so much for all of your work on HRD and Satellite
Tracker. HRD is an amazing suite of software.
73 to all,

Which beta version of 4.1 are you using? I found that I had the same
problem until 4.1 build 1985. Satellite stuff can be accessed without a
rig hooked up. I did find that resources can really get eaten up by HRD
when doing satellite stuff. If the description of HRD V5.0 is correct,
it may ease up the overhead on computers by not trying to do so many
things at once (some of which you may not need).
