DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

This coming Tuesday, June 17th, a National Level Exercise called CWID, which
stands of (Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration) will be held. I
heard there was a Telephone Conference Call this past week that involved
several West Virginia county Office of Emergency Services Directors. I don't
know what all was talked about, but I did hear the use of Amateur Radio was
expressed, and should be tested. Who ever was in charge of the conference call
wanted to make sure that Amateur Radio operators in the affected counties would
be able to communicate with each other. From what I'm picking up from
different sources, different counties are operating the CWID at different times
and for different lengths of time. To show that Amateur Radio is being used in
West Virginia, I plan to be on the air from about 9:00 am until about 6:00 pm
on Tuesday. I will have an HF Radio set on 3611 KHz, two Two Meter voice
stations, one set on the 147.255 MHz Wood County Repeater, and one that will be
scanning other Two Meter voice repeaters, and a Packet station. The packet
station will be operated on the DAREN system. The DAREN Chatroom will be
operational, and, at least one Wood County station will be connected into the
chatroom. Stations wanting to show their participation in the NLE/CWID
exercise can communicate with me, or other operators, on any of the above
systems. There may be more then one Wood County station in operation, but the
callsign of the main Wood County station will be WC8EC. To check into the
DAREN Chatroom system, just connect to the ALIAS of "DAREN" from any NODE that
can reach the Ritchie County NODE of "RITCWV", since they are at the same
location. You should be able to connect to "DAREN" direct from: JACKWV,
MONOWV, PENDWV, PRESWV, RANDWV, ROANWV, WASHOH, WETZWV, WOODWV, and maybe
others, and maybe direct. If you have trouble connecting to "DAREN" direct
from one of the NODEs, you may have to go through another NODE. But in most
cases you should be able to connect to the chatroom with just one or two hops.you get connected to "DAREN" type either a "T"

or the word "TALK", and
you're in the Chatroom. To leave the chatroom when you're finished, just type
a "/EX". That will take you out of the chatroom, then you can type a "B", for
Bye, and you will be disconnected from the DAREN NODE. Even though the
original exercise plans doesn't make any mention of Amateur Radio, the "I" in
CWID stands for Interoperability, and I think we should make ourselves known to
the county Offices of Emergency Services Directors. Maybe they will understand
that we can be of assistance "IF" for some reason they have no other means of
communications, or they need additional communication resources. I've heard
the State Office of Emergency Services may also have their Amateur Radio
station/s operational for the exercise. This might be a good warm up for Field
Day which will be coming up on June 28th and 29th.

There were 58 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Ryan Thomas,
KD8EMM, needs only one more check-in to make 50.
