DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

I went to the Butler Hamfest today, and didn't get home until about 8:00 pm, so
I'm a little late getting the DAREN News started. While there. I ran into a
couple of the DAREN operators. One of the operators was Larry Slagle, KB8CVP,
who told me about a problem with the tower that one of the DAREN NODEs was
located on. I'm not for sure which one it was, but it was only off the air for
about a week, so I must not have missed it. It seems that another organization
was installing a tower very close the one that had the DAREN NODE on it. While
they were pouring the concrete for the new tower, a concrete truck snagged one
of the guys wires and brought the whole tower down. They were able to get
another tower up and get the DAREN NODE back in operation before I missed it.
Larry also said that he was hoping to go to the State Convention at Jackson's
Mill on August 23rd. He said that if he didn't get to make it, that he wanted
to let me know that the Preston County Amateur Radio Club will be operating an
SES (Special Event Station) at the Annual Buckwheat Festival which will be held
from September 25th through the 28th. They have already applied for the SES
Callsign of W8B. They will also be operating as the Net Control Station for
the State Wide DAREN Net on September 27th. So be sure to mark your calendar
for the SES, and where the Net Control Station will be located that weekend.
Larry also gave an update on Rich Wolfe, KA8UEU. He said that Rich is not in
very good heath and has been in and out of hospitals and nursing homes for the
past several months. I want to wish Rich the best of luck and hope that he get
to feeling better soon.

I got a message for Gene Roy, N8ER, this week telling me about the Tucker
County NODE/PBBS of TUCKWV/PRSNWV. The NODE/PBBS is off the air due to the
removal of the tower which is was located on. Another group is installing a
300 foot tower in the place of the old on. The old tower was owned by the
Department of High Ways, and their communication equipment will be located on
the new tower. Gene sid that he does not have access to the new tower to
install the DAREN station, so he will have to find another location to install
it. In the mean time we will need to use, and rely on, the NODE/PBBS of
TUCKES/PRSNES, which is at Gene's house, for traffic into and out of Tucker
County. Operators should try to connect to the TUCKES/PRSNES station so they
will know the best path to it. I want to thank Gene for the information. I
knew the station had been off theair, but didn't know why.

Yesterday I finally got to teach a one day class to the Mid Ohio Valley Health
Department so some of their employees could get licensed as Technician Class
Amateurs. The employees had been given the question pool, and a link to the
ARRL web site, weeks before the class, so they could practice taking tests on
line. Basically all I had to do in the class was to go over the question pool,
answer any questions the students had, and explain anything they didn't
understand. After the class was over VE testing was administered and six new
Amateurs are now waiting for their licenses. This was just the first group
who wants to get their license. I'll be holding the same type of class in the
future. Maybe in the few weeks we will see some of the new licensees checking
into the State Wide DAREN Net.

There were 56 check-ins again to this week's State Wide DAREN Net.
