DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

Lee Mairs, KM4YY, sent me an E-Mail, telling me about the Hampshire County
NODE/PBBS of HAMPWV/RMNYWV. He's had the station on the air for some time now,
but it hasn't been getting any use. Access to the NODE/PBBS is through the
Mineral County NODE of MINEWV. Now that I know it's there' I'll be posting the
DAREN News, and State Wide DAREN Net Announcement. Thanks for putting the
station on the air Lee.

The DAREN News is just a little late getting out this week, I went to the
Dayton Hamfest this weekend, and meet a few of the DAREN operators from both
Ohio and West Virginia. I also picked up a few items that may be put into
operation on DAREN system and Packet Radio in general, if they are any good.

I got a telephone call from John Peterson, K8ZPR, telling me about and exercise
that was going to be held in Hancock County on Wednesday. John was wanting to
be able to send a message, via Packet Radio, to someone and have them return
a Packet message back. He said that Gary Rosenlieb, KC8YJJ, would be sending
the message at around 6:30 PM. I was watching the system when Gary was trying
to connect into the Wood County PBBS of PKBGWV. I don't know what happened but
Gary seemed to be having trouble getting connected, and the message never did
get posted. I hope the exercise went okay.

I received my copy of the SERA (SouthEastern Repeater Association) Repeater
Journal. I found an advertisement of the 50th West Virginia State ARRL
Convention and ARRL Roanoke Division Convention. The convention will be held
on August 23th and 24th, at Jackson's Mill in Weston. Four very well known
speakers will be at the convention. The speakers are: Riley Hollingsworth,
K4ZDH, FCC Special Enforcement Bureau, Bill Cross, W3TN, FCC Wireless
Telecommunications Bureau, Gordon West, WB6NOA, Gordon West Radio School, and
Ed Hare, W1RFI, ARRL Technical Laboratory Supervisor. There will be several
activities such as VE Exams, ARRL Forum, DX Forum, Special Event Station,
Emergency Communicn Set-up Competition, Technical Forum, ARES,
MARS, QCWA, and NTS Net Meetings, Flea Market, and an Auction. This might be
one convention that everyone should try to make. If you have any questions
about the convention, contact: Patrick Shea, N8MIN, 27 Jackson St., Weston, WV,
26452, E-Mail: pshea@citynet.net, or Telephone: (304) 269-3468.

There were 63 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Lisa Henedershot,
KB8UER, who's been participating in the net since August 20, 1994, has
completed 700 check-ins. And Charles (Chuck) Bennett Sr., WD8DNC, who's been
participating in the net since August 21, 1993, has completed 250 check-ins.
Both of these operators will be receiving their certificates. I want to
welcome Edwin Mongeni, N8VFJ, back to the DAREN Net, Edwin, has been missing
from the net since January 6, 1996. Edwin's check-in will be added to his
previous check-ins. I hope he starts checking in on a regular basis again. I
finally got the Net Participation Certificates printed up and mailed out on
Tuesday, to those who have been waiting for them. If you were expecting a
certificae, and didn't get it, let me know. I want to make sure everyone gets
the certificates they deserve.
