Hi radio history buffs,
I feel a personal connection with Tor Heyerdal and his Kon-Tiki expedition,
after a series of scrounged radio chassis my first communications receiver
was the same make and model he used, a National Radio NC-173. While the
transmitter is unknown to me, in one of many pictures the receiver can be
seen through an open door. Using a socket on the rear skirt it is battery
capable, the 6V heater line powered by a storage battery and the B+ by any
number of means including a 90V B battery in common use with portable radios,
I happened to have one of those too. For AC mains operation a jumper plug is
inserted into the battery socket and it uses its internal power transformer
and rectifier. That's when it was one small step for a teenager, one giant
leap for SWLing <groan> and the future KB2VXA.
