DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

Not much news this week. Things seem to be quiet. Maybe everyone is getting
ready to head for the Dayton Hamfest. I've already got my ticket, but I'm
having second thoughts since the price of gas is so high. I guess I'll go this
year, but I will have to think about next year.

I almost forgot to wish all of the Mothers who read the DAREN News, a Happy
Mother's Day.

I got a telephone call from the Department of High Ways this week asking if the
Wirt County NODE/PBBS of WIRTWV/ELIZWV, has been put back in service. I had to
take it off the air a few months ago to see if it may be causing interference
to the DOH radio system. They haven't been having any problems for awhile and
told me I could put it back in service to see if the system would cause
interference with their system. At the DOH tower site I had two radio systems,
one was the DAREN Packet station, and the other one was a Remote Receiver for
the 147.255 MHz voice repeater which uses a 439 MHz transmitter to send the
remote receiver signal back to the transmitter. I told him as soon as I put
the stations back on the air, I would let him know. So, the Wirt County NODE
will go back on the air in a few days, but may not stay on, if, it causes
problems with the DOH radio system.

There were 69 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Ken Riffle,
KB8QPW, who's been participating in the net since January 1, 1994, has
completed 650 check-ins, and will be receiving his certificate. Lisa
Hendershot, KB8UER, needs only on more check-in to make 700. And Charles
(Chuck) Bennett Sr., WD8DNC, needs only one more check-in to 250. There were
two news stations that checked into the net this week and they were David
Sypolt, KC8YSO, from Kingwood, and Chester O'Brien, N8CHT, from Belington. I
want to welcome both of these operators to the DAREN system and hope they can
check into the net as often as possible. When I first saw the new callsigns, I
thought they may have been stations from Ohio that were using the K8KHW-7
Crossover NODE. Then I got to thinking that just because the weekly net is
called State Wide DAREN Net, that only West Virginia station can check in. The
only reason that it started being called State Wide DAREN Net was the fact that
all of the NODEs on the system were located in West Virginia, and most of the
participates would be in West Virginia. Since the net has been operating for
almost 16 years, there have been NODEs in installed in Maryland, Virginia, and
Ohio, and stations from Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West
Virginia have checked in. So if you are reading this DAREN News, we want to
welcome Packet Radio operators from any state to check into the State Wide
DAREN Net, by what ever means they can. I hope to get caught up with the
Check-in Certificates this week, since I'm a couple of months behind.
