Hi all of those remaining,
Every kid in the neighborhood had a Frisbee and a Super Ball, Hula Hoops not
so much. Somebody gave me a Hula Hoop i quickly lost interest in, but I spent
my allowance on a Super Ball that as advertised bounced higher than any other
ball. Made of compressed hard rubber one had to be careful not to get hit
with one of those hard as rock things!
Here's my sidebar on hula hoops beginning with the mother of all air raid
sirens on a pole a few feet from my house that belonged on a tall building.
It went off every Saturday at 12:00 noon, what better time for an air raid
when everybody ignored the sirens? About the time Hoola Hoops came out I had
learned enough about electricity to figure out what the box with a handle
was, a fused disconnect switch. The light shone on me, I taped a coat hanger
to a bamboo pole, reached up and pulled the handle down, problem solved.
Meanwhile someone tossed a Hula Hoop over the siren that remained until we
moved out in 1971, possibly much longer.
