Hi all,
That was an interesting reminder of music and attitudes in the '50s, it
reminded me of a couple of things.
Not only were public performances banned (more on Asbury Park, NJ later) but
radio DJs smashed records of "that devil music" on the air publicly
denouncing it. The famous American comedian and TV personality Steve Allen
started his career as a radio DJ, and in what was to become his trademark
parodied them on the air. He'd start to play an old favorite, rip it off the
turntable, smash it and several more denouncing them as "that old fogey
music".
The rise in popularity of Rap Music naturally led to concerts at popular
venues at the Jersey Shore, bad idea. They were flooded by punks (and I'm
being kind) from urban ghettos in the New York City/North Jersey area, bloody
fighting erupted disrupting the concert and spilled over outside where they
rampaged through cities rioting and looting. It didn't take long before
Asbury Park led the way banning Rap concerts from the Jersey Shore, local
radio stations no longer play it either.
Oh we're not old sticks in the mud "down the shore", our WRAT Rat Radio FM
beats the snot out of the New York stations in ratings consistently. The city
of license is Point Pleasant, and guess where I am. Hey, I may be 65 but i
ain't dead yet!
"New Jersey, the most American of all states. It has everything from
wilderness to the Mafia. All the great things and all the worst, like Route
22."
