In the most recent TODAY we have had the story of Lvi Strauss inventing
jeans.
I once heard on a radio programme, the tale of how, during th gold rush,
the miners, while panning, rapidly destroyed their flannel trousers and
went to the camp tailor a frenchman called Jean, to get new ones. Sadly,
one day, Jean had run out of flannel and the miners were looking foraward
to hanging out in the cold. An unpleasant prospect.
After some delay, with no fresh cloth, Jean mentioned that he had some
rolls of a type of thin canvas called Voile de Nimes (denim ?) and that he
would try that if the miners could stand it.
The miners found it superior to flannel and much harder wearing,
particularly as jean had to revet it at weak points as the thread wasn't
tough enough.
People started asking for "Jean's" or "Denims" and the popularity spread
way down among the cowboys.
So which story do you like, the tale of Levi Strauss or th Jean and his de
Nimes ?
I know which I like :-)
