Hi Dave and all,
The callsign list on a BBS is not truely indicative of how many users it
has, rather the node. Being antennaless for the time being I can't speak
for current events but a quick rundown of NJ2AR says I was the only user
of the BBS worldwide while another relays traffic through the NTS system.
Still others use the node exclusively making me the only visible user
while all appear on the list. That's a user survey with a mean twist so
you really can't use it for demographic analysis.
Even if a BBS has no users still the node performs useful functions as
above. Then don't forget forwarding so even if it has no local users at
all it's still essential to keep the nework alive. I've seen key nodes go
down leaving whole sections isolated little islands and worse, some of
those holes cover several states so there's no connectivity at all and
you know what that means, the internet takes over to fill the void and
packet becomes a non radio mode.
I try to look on the bright side of life like Monty Python, I may be
crazy but I'm not stupid so no ranting about it here and no mopping up
spilt milk either. Just praise for the hardy sysops and a whole load of
thanks, without them we'd all be on the internet.
