Not quite correct (at here on the other side of Australia).

Automatic weapons, aka machine guns, have been prohibited from private
ownership longer than I have been alive. What was banned were
Semi-Automatic long arms, that fire a shot each time the trigger is
pulled, and pump action shotguns.

So, i'm not allowed to own a semi-automatic rifle a semi-automatic or pump
action shotgun, as these are too dangerous. However, as a target psitol
shooter, I can own multiple semi-auto pistols.

These ownership laws were brought in to effect by our previous prime
minister, Mr Howard, in response to the press sensationalising a number of
shootings. The Australian constitution prevents the commonwealth
government making laws on firearms ownership, so Mr Howard threatened to
stop the supply of government funds to any state that didn't bring in the
legislation he wanted. He also organised several huge "Buy back" schemes,
where the government took money from the public health scheme (hospital
funding) to compensate firearm owners who handed in their newly banned
firearms.
