Hi Pete and anyone,
Here we have another case of missing the original bull and getting lost in
replies. Oh, since you spelled his name several ways which is the correct
one... if any? (;->)
He MIGHT have the call wrong? Have you seen another even barely resembling
that of a Very Xcellent Amateur? <blush>
I have a different take on the last nail in the packet coffin because I just
call the shots like I see them and pull no punches. The final blow came when
three UK trolls attacked everything that moved and half of what didn't,
cleared the BBS of all but the robots and a few survivors, then left their
work having been done. The odd bit was G0FTD who was as normal as you please
on the Southgate ARC web site and contributed very helpful material while on
packet he was one of the vicious trolls. Then he dissappeared altogether.
Another sad part is they drove the YL Net to an internet site and the budding
OM Net fell apart.
As far as schools are concerned the move from Amateur Radio to computer labs
started decades ago when computers moved out of a warehouse to hold one and
into cube farms and homes, normal and natural progression of technology. At
one time Amateur Radio was a teaching aid for electronics and radio
communication, that's gone commercial and computers are at the forefront of
everything today. Basically without knowing computers you're going nowhere
but watching a monitor at McDonalds to make up the next order.
Well, I can't blame Amateur clubs for anything, everybody has an opinion and
I won't get tangled up in THAT mess other than to say I was a member of
several, the last has several repeaters and a critical packet node/BBS in the
now all but dead North East Bulletin Board System (H address NEBBS). The
Jersey Shore ARC (JSARS) is a decent outfit better than most but the BEST was
and probably still is... Old Barney (for the lighthouse) aka OBARC. Why?
They're REAL old school, no repeater. (;->) OK, I spilled the beans......
Yeah, I'm still lurking and reply to the now very rare bull worth replying
to, so is Pete apparently but it seems we lost Ian G0TEZ. After much arm
twisting I got him to join the Island Of Misfit Hams on the internet, a great
bunch because they ARE Misfits and a few runaways from a circus. He made a
few posts and disappeared, I'm going to have to drop an e-mail on him.
I leave you with this thought, it's good to know there are still a few meat
bags left on packet even if they're in hiding; robots haven't taken over
completely.
