Hello all,
I discovered why my message did not make it out past the local bbs,
I didn't address it properly to WW instead it went local area only.
Still new to the packet addressing scheme and not many tutorials I
can find on it. I've been learning by observation.
I just installed Winpack running under windows xp which is virtualized
using VMWARE on my linux machine. I mainly use linux but when necessary to
run any older apps or for compatibility's sake I can launch dos, windows
98 and windows xp as virtual machines using the VMWARE virtual machine
tool.
In any case winpack would not install for some reason under xp so I
installed it in 98 without a hitch. I then copied the directory over
from 98 (one virtual machine to the other) to xp and ran it there. It
yelled it was missing some visual basic DLL's and so I found them on the
98 box and copied them onto the XP box in the same directory as where the
winpack files are. Voila it works great. Someone said it was written in
C++ but it seems to me the Author was using visual basic.
It's old but nice features for it's day. I like many other lids are using
the internet to connect to a router to get to my bbs because the locals
here in Las Vegas mainly use the packet frequencies nowadays for emergency
comms, ARES RACES etc.. They have a bbs here but all it has is weather and
earthquake reports and net check ins so I am using one in northern Nevada
to get the good bulletins (THANK YOU BBS OP!). I can get to the local bqp
switch here via rf and then up to the bbs in northern Nevada, but of
course that hop is over the internet anyway so what's the point, and then
you get flack for tying up the rf channel! Packet is old, but maybe it can
be rethought and retooled with newer apps to make it interesting and fun
again. BTW, only been a ham for several years, but have a digital comms
background and was following packet before there was even a thing called
the internet, i.e. arpanet etc. etc.
On a good note, I just installed a 2.4ghz mesh node (see hsmm-mesh) so I
have ip connectivity now to others on the mesh network and the local bpq
server will be on it soon so I will have access that way VIA RF.
I still question all the internet connectivity, even though I know it's
convenient, I always say to myself, what's the point of packet if it's not
over RF.
