The situation is the same in the UK Dave. At least 150 stations emerge from
the shadows for 2 hours on the SSB activity nights, then disappear without
trace until the next one a month later.

You can call your head off on any UK repeater and never get a QSO, even
during lift conditions. Yet when you meet them down the pub they tell you
that they heard your CQ's!

You can spend all evening repeater hopping on Echolink. Thousands of
repeaters, all silent.

It seems that most hams are "Licensed listeners", happy to consume, but
unwilling to contribute.

I haven't a clue why..
