Hi Bob and die hards,
How well I know how the network has all but collapsed entirely since the
Packet Wars of the 1990s and the rants against "land line lids" who use
Telnet protocol for connections and forwarding, sadly I was one following in
the footsteps of W0RLI. Now I too am a land line lid because of several
reasons but that's life in the packet lane, I had to grow up and change my
tune since Telnet is now the backbone of what's left of the network following
the day the radio died. Sorry Miss American Pie.
All I can say is please replace hardware, the weak link in the chain, but
you'll at least have me as a die hard user and with die hard sysops like
yourself you'll have forwarding partners.
Here I publicly praise and thank you for providing the service, we'll keep
fighting 'till the end, we are the Champions. Sorry Freddie Mercury wherever
you are. As an aside, many will remember the TV show Have Gun Will Travel and
the gun for hire, a man called Palidin. He used the chess piece the knight as
his logo, Paladin is Spanish for champion.
Oh one last thing, I'm saddened as many are since many parts of the world
like Germany have fallen off the packet map since believe it or not they have
to pay for internet bandwidth usage so radio is the only way to connect and
forward. With so many links down we've also lost wide areas of the US and
other places, the packet map is pretty barren these days. When I was sysop of
the central NJ BBS/node I tried in vain to restablish some paths through the
West and Canada, it's a sad state of affairs. Then to make life miserable,
more recently there was The Terrible Three from the UK who drove away most of
the users who were left, packet has become The Three Little Indians as a
result. Having finished the job they dissapeared back beneath their rocks but
the damage is done, oh well.
