Hi Sergej and all,
Thanks for the copy and paste from the internet, it says more than what I
wrote from memory, I was unaware that there was more than one site and that
it also interfered with long range HF Aeronautical communications. That gets
serious, to hams it was just annoying.
What I am aware of is the fact that technology marches on so OTH signals
sound different and other countries including the US have joined in the
"fun". We hams have a whole range of new crap to put up with like fishermen's
buoys and telemetry installations along the shore that communicate with more
elaboate buoys for other purposes. Then to sweeten the pot there are fishing
boats in the Far East using Amateur frequencies, yo ho ho and a bottle of
rum. (;->)
For anyone interested there are pictures of the Russian Woodpecker site(s) on
the internet, imagine working DX with THAT antenna! A related story with
pictures is a group of hams on the way to the famous Dayton, Ohio hamvention
connected their rigs to the monster antennas at the inactive VOA transmitter
site in Bethany. That was a one shot adventure, the site was demolished
shortly after. BTW the switch yard looked like a power company substation,
considering power levels it had to handle some VERY high RF voltage.
