Hi Frank and all,

I'm surprised you don't know what happened to the Russian Woodpecker after
all these years. OK, to answer your questions, it's been inactive and the
site abandoned. It was over the horizon radar and yes, it was really Russian.
I suppose you have internet access so if you use Google or another good
search engine you'll find plenty about it and some spectacular pictures of
the site. It's accessable to the public now so you'll find pictures of people
climbing on the antenna array and some taken from it, te thing is very high
and overall huge.

OHR is still used by many countries and in some cases has interfered with
Amateur communications but nothing nearly as nasty as that woodpecker sound.
BTW in your internet travels you'll find at least one downloadable audio file
of it to bring back memories. One last thing, some hams actually got the
thing to shut up temporarily by sending a series of dits on the center
frequency.
