Andy is one of the main contributors to packet in recent years. There have
been notable others, including myself.

When I think about the technical ability of most of the regular
contributors here it makes me wonder why the hell bulletins have
degenerated into what they have. I don't exclude myself from being involved
on the lunacy roundabout.

Andy is obviously technically inclined and could teach both newcomers and
the not so new about operating portable. He also has considerable computer
based skills that some would kill for.

Warren has vast experience with things radio and electronic.

Bob has VHF and UHF distance records under his belt and could describe his
station equipment to the benefit of others.

David is involved in old equipment restoration.

I've had 40 years as a radio amateur and 35 years working in the two-way
radio/telecommunications industry doing repairs and such, and I'm quite
comfortable working with Linux for AR applications - I'm currently helping
3 stations on a mailing list, and not on packet.

Those are just five examples of a wealth of knowledge that's going to
waste.

Why don't we contribute bulletins that might a) help other established
amateurs and b) encourage newcomers to packet?

Is it because we think that nobody is interested in basic. intermediate or
advanced articles about our favourite aspects of the hobby? Is it because as
soon as somebody writes something that might be slightly erroneous, or
doesn't fit another's point of view, the author is, as often as not,
ridiculed? Fit your own reason in here .......

I'm completely self taught with radio and I'm proud of it. I've made lots
of mistakes along the way, I've asked some stupid questions, and I've made
some equally ridiculous statements. It's all a part of the learning curve
but I don't feel bad about it because I've had answers that engineers
haven't had! The school of hard knocks - being at the coal face - is a
wonderful education.

Packet radio is a most wonderful tool. I've lost count of the number of
times I've said that over recent years. Those of us who are regular
contributors to packet would, it would seem, believe in the mode; why else
have we stuck it out! I believe that we also have the ability to turn
things around. It's time we stopped the petty bickering and the caustic
comments and started helping each other and the packet mode.

There isn't one of those mentioned earlier in this posting that isn't
capable of doing that. We are, afer all, intelligent people.

Cheers ... Ray vk2tv
