GB2RS Main News for Sunday 7th July 2013
The news headlines:
* Ofcom updates
* AMSAT-UK International Space Colloquium
* MSF scheduled maintenance periods
On page 7 of the July RadCom there was news on a number of Ofcom
consultations. The release of spectrum at 2.3 and 3.4GHz is the topic
of a substantial and thorough Ofcom consultation that also has wider
implications for Secondary allocations and licensing and will
conclude on 22 July. Both the Society and some leading commercial
organisations highlighted significant concerns regarding the impact
that 2.3GHz LTE might have on 2.4GHz usage and capacity. The RadCom
GHz column and RSGB website has data and links regarding this and an
online discussion forum. Also available online on the Ofcom and RSGB
websites are our recent responses to 24GHz car radar, additional
spectrum for wireless broadband at WRC-15, and exempt use of 2.4GHz,
which is related to the 2.3GHz spectrum release. Ofcom has now
implemented new automotive radar regulations that will gradually
phase out wide band car radar from our 24GHz Primary allocation. The
topic also has a linkage to WRC-15 Agenda Item 1.18 for 78GHz vehicle
radars. We understand that the VHF Consultation, which includes the
prospect of 146 to 147MHz and other low band opportunities, may now
not be released until the end of the summer. You can read more at
http://rsgb.org/consultations.
The CubeSat workshop and International Space Colloquium take place in
Guildford from 19 to 21 July. The event attracts an international
audience from across Europe as well as North America and Africa. It
provides a rare opportunity for beginners to chat with satellite
builders and discover more about this fascinating branch of the
hobby. Further information can be found on the Colloquium page of the
AMSAT-UK website at http://amsat-uk.org/.
The MSF 60kHz standard frequency and time signal, broadcast by
Babcock on behalf of NPL, is occasionally taken off the air to allow
maintenance work on the masts and antennas at Anthorn Radio Station
to be carried out in safety. This means that your radio controlled
clock will not be picking up the MSF signal, so may not be working
correctly. The transmitter will be off during the day from Saturday 6
July to Thursday 18 July between 0800BST and 1800BST, but will be
back on air overnight. The next maintenance period won't be until
September.
The RSGB President, Bob Whelan, G3PJT will be using the call GB4RS
for the rest of 2013. He will be active on all HF bands, CW and SSB,
and on 6m and 4m too as time permits. QSL information is on QRZ.com.
G100RSGB, the special event callsign celebrating the RSGB Centenary,
will be operated today by Harwell ARS. Tomorrow is the RSGB
President's Day where an HF station on 40m will run CW and SSB from
Comberton. On 9 July it's the turn of the RSGB Region 9 Team, then it
moves on to the Reading & DARC for three days from the 10th. They
will run CW and SSB on the 10 through to 80m bands. Finally, for this
week, the station goes to Stevenage & DARS with a station running CW,
SSB & FM on the 2m to 160m bands. Details of how to get your QSL card
are on the RSGB website, www.rsgb.org.uk, under the Operating drop
down menu, clicking on Centenary Station.
There is still time to book a table at Amateur Radio in the Country
event on 21 July at Upton Bridge Farm, Long Sutton, Langport,
Somerset TA10 9NJ. Send an e-mail to Tim at walfor<at>globalnet.co.uk
to book your space. The public gate opens at 10am.
From 30 July, candidates sitting any of the amateur radio
examinations will be using new paperwork, which is associated with a
new computer system for generating and processing examination papers.
The Society has written to all Examination Secretaries with copies of
changed documentation and an explanatory note. If you are an
examination secretary and have not received a copy of this pack,
please contact Carol Meredith at RSGB HQ. The new software will allow
more automation in the processing of examinations and over time will
provide a much greater level of statistical information on question
validity, with minimal effort. You can download a copy of the pack
e-mailed to Examination Secretaries from www.rsgb.org/exampack.
At the Ham Radio show in Friedrichshafen last weekend, the Horkheimer
Prize was awarded to Wolf, DK2OM in recognition of his outstanding
work in the DARC Bandwacht and IARU Monitoring Service. The show
itself had around 15,300 visitors through the doors, retaining its
title of Europe's largest amateur radio gathering. Some 200
exhibitors and organisations from 33 countries were on hand to
display and demonstrate their latest products.

Queen Elizabeth in 1982. The club received special permission to
operate at the top of the tower and are expecting more than a few
good contacts! They plan to operate on 2m & 70cm from 6pm, if anyone
would like to work the club from such an unusual location and join in
their celebration. Hopefully the weather will be kind to those that
are brave enough to go up the tower.
