...
and another one, highly intersting to read..

Just few days back I have seen a tv-coverage about the end of the
"Red Baron" and it looks evident that not a canadian pilot (who
always pretended the "scalp on his belt") but indeed the mashine
gunner of an Aussi-detachment was the man.

Richthofen flew this day against his normal rule with a very low
altitude of only few meters, following an enemy plane which dived
down for the attempt to escpape.

But one thing in your coverage is probbly wrong: the colour of
the plane had nothing or better few to do with the old cavalry
regiment.

There was an order from the German HQ to paint the planes.. What
THEY meant: camoulflage, dark for the top and blue to the bottom
of the planes.

The whole squadron secretly "misunderstood" the order (in fact:
they rebelled against it) and every plane was painted in another
lighty colour. They saw themselves in the heritage of the old
German Knights in its attitude, fair fighting and "open visier" -
and v.R, chose the colour "red" which caused some flak in the HQ.
So of course it is not impossible he remembered the old regiment
but the background was indeed "paint the planes!", every pon in
his own colour.

Attidtude like knights: I've been very disappointed about an
interview with the gunner or one of his mates (I am not too sure)
which still was alive and could answer question. One was the
emotion to v.R. who always had high reputation (see the way how
he was brought to military funeral) and the answer of this man
was: "We had been happy the bastard was dead!" Hmmmmmm

Interestiung: within his squadron the later nominated "Air
Marshall" by Adolf Hitler Hermann Goering was one of the pilots.
And not a bad one, a coward he never was!

But he showed even in that time a bad character, so he was
dispised by his own fellows due to a "killing" of an enemy-pilot,
tried to land powerless due to an injury after the fight with
Goering
