Abot 25 years ago, what I termed the BANS= Born Again Non Smokers, were
often see as a bit of a joke but now, when the government has put their
weight behind them and made smoking illegal in all sorts of places, they
don't seem all that funny.

As with alcohol in the US, many people are fighting the BANS in many ways
from the people who just grow their own via people who bring back a few
extra packs on holiday to organized gangs who smuggle tobacco in tons.

Elated by their success, the government put ot's weight beghind BAND the
born again Non Drinkers.

Some things are obviously propaganda, e.g. if someone got mouth cancer, it
was blamed on pipe smoking. Now, pipe smopkers have disappeared so they
state as a matter of fact that it is caused by drinking.
Pubs have been closing in 100s per week, it is like a civil war. People
with bigger houses buy cheap beer and tobacco from other sources and sit
around with their friends smoking and drinking and, especially the younger
ones, playing music.

We have no equivalent of a Scarface, in our area it is more like a
Mohammed but the law on smoking and drinking is having it's effect on the
pub trade.

Men with plastic shopping bags are to be found in every pub. It is a bit
like prostitution, someone will always tell you where the red light up
district is.

Ever more unusual cans of foreigh beer are appearing in the off licences.

We did get around to brewing our own back in the 80s for different
reasons.
The bucket in the airing cupboard was common knowledge and people were
going around in search of nice, strong, lemonade bottles. Among others, I
discovered the simplicity of freeze distilling. You put a flat dish of a
mild tasting brew like potato, in the top of your fridge and leave
overnight. In the morning, you remove the top layer of ice with a couple
of forks and throw away, carefully siphon off the licquor in the middle,
that is the alcohols and dump the slufge at the bottom. Voila ! you have
Vodka,
at a fraction of thje rip off government prices !

No people driving big cars and opening up with Tommy Guns, it's not the
British way. Just an offshoot of the do it yourself wine connoiseurs,
quiet and sneaky. If you want to be like Capone, go and find the real drug
smugglers. Better still, stay away from them !

I couldn't put it better myself Al, n0nfq.

Now for my next trip. Tha ithela kapnos, posso ?, 5 Eu, evkharisto, Adio.
