Today marks 200 years since the US Congress declared war on England
to start the War of 1812.
The lead up was really all about the relations between England and
France, and the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon.
Nearly 15 years of 1800s was war between Napoleon and England and
their Allies < only 1802- 1804 a truce > ending in the defeat.
Both nations blocked each other's ports, and the only difference was
that England's navl blocade was more effective, and this meant American
commercial trade was greatly effected, thus a cause for the war.
The other cause was the stopping of Americna ships, and sailors taken
and inpressed into the Royal Navy. Just before war was to be declared
England offered to end this practice, but to no avail ... War was
declared, and met with domestic anti-war protest, threats of sucession
riots, and was not popular.
This was the first time as well the USA declared war on a country.
For us in CANADA, and for Canadians, it would lead to nationhood, and
is remembered here, as a fight for our way of life against an agressor.
Canadian and American border areas, will celebrate the events of this
war, along the lines, of why we didn't want to fight, and why as good
neighbours we were forced into this situation and why we came togther
afterward, and why since we have strenthened this relationship ... not
in words but action as neighbours.
The end of this war, was brought about, when Napoleon was defeated
and England's Navy and Army was free to take care of this war, and
started to arrive in Canada, as well the Navy to carry out operations.
The good news, for the USA, is they setup a Navy. This also lead
to starting West Point.
End of Napoleon meant Peace in the War of 1812....
