Here is the alternative version of the invention of jeans according to the
BBC.
Back in the alaskan goldrush, miners panning for gold went very heavily on
the knees and backsides of the trousers they wore.
They had a camp tailor, a Frenchman called jean, who was kept working flat
out to make trosers for miners.
One day, he had not got a delivery of serge, he was besieged by dozens of
desperate miners. He told them that the only cloth he had inh stock was
Voile de Nimes, a tough cloth like loght sailcloth. The miners agreed to
give it a try. It proved to be tougher and longer lasting than the old
serge so he ordered more voile de Nimes and reinforced the seams by adding
rivets as well as at the corners of pockets.
The miners called them 'Jean's' as thay couldent pronounce 'Jean' and also
called them 'Denims' from Voile de Nimes.
These tough trousers became popular and travelled south where cowboys
started to wear them.
I don't know what you think but the above story sounds far more believable
than the Levi Strauss version, who decided to patent them.
