World News this Week

World Wide ATV Open House
The ATV Newsletter is putting together a World Wide ATV Open House. A Virtual Open House to get more members for your groups and clubs. And to make all hams aware of ATV and give them a chance to get on the air and make some contacts with their computer.
The Open House will be 24 hours and open to all hams that want in on the fun. By taking advantage of the technology of the Internet and using streaming communications via Skype, ooVoo, echolink, talkback/talkin freqs and even the keyboard and the chat rooms a QSO can be made.
With these simple tools we can open the doors of ATV and have a chance to show off our stations, our repeaters and our world of ATV.
The date of the World Wide ATV Open House will be somewhere between Sept. and the first part of December. But that will give us all a chance to get all our ducks in a row.
I want to raise the level of awareness for ATV in the Amateur Radio world and create more interest. Here is one example of how this Open House will do the job.
Here in Southern California in an area called San Fernando Valley. And it has a population of 1.6 million people and has only 3 hams involved in ATV. And there are two ATV repeater systems in the area. No one knows that the repeaters are there. And I bet it's the same in your area.
I will be putting together a list of ATV repeaters that want in on the World Wide ATV Open House so I can get the information to the Amateur Radio Publications. Hams will be able to see that there areATV repeaters in Baltimore, Wichita, Los Angeles. San Jose, Las Vegas,Grimsby UK, Dallas, Rockford, Bowling Green or ......where your repeater is located.
I will Have more on this project as it developes. And I welcome any positive input for the event. Please send to: world-wide-atv-repeater-network@hotmail.com

World Wide ATV Repeater Network
After the World Wide ATV Open House the network of ATV repeaters could be used to continue and do fantastic things.
Consider Live Streaming Video from Amateur Radio events and recordings of demonstrations, presentations and educational programs pertaining to Amateur Radio.
Imagine live ATV from DXpeditions in the Christmas Islands or the Antarctic or anyplace in the world. And all supported by a world wide ATV repeater network. The benefit to Amateur Radio could be enormous.
What if the ARRL Section Manages were to make the messages in the form of a video that could be streamed to ATV repeaters for distribution.
Here in Southern California a group did a video of a High School ATV contact with the Space Shuttle and it was great and it had great production quality. I was on the GB3ZZ camstream and saw a promotional video for ATV and it was great. The San Bernardino Microwave Society produced a educational video about measuring the noise of the sun to test microwave equipment and it was great. I would bet there are dozens if not hundreds of interesting videos of ATV interest setting out there collecting dust and they all could be streamed to other ATV repeaters via the network.
We have to stop thinking small because ATV can only cover the areas that UHF and Microwave can deliver. We have to start thinking BIG and HOW BIG CAN ATV GROW.
More on this subject as it develops.

Week before last I was spending my Friday afternoon linking to the GB3GG streaming video and their net and I ran into G0EKH, Ken. Ken has an ATV repeater located in Southwest England. I promised to list his repeater but after I put it in the newsletter last week and tried the address but it didn't work. I pulled the listing and later found out that there was a big power outage and that was why the link didn't work. It gave Ken some time to put together a nice fact sheet on his repeater. Here it is:
Torbay Amateur Television & Microwave Group
Hi Bryon
Many thanks for your email and also the ATV Newsletter, which I have circulated to the members of our Group.
Just a short note about us... Our 23cms Repeater, GB3TB, was built and commissioned in November 2001 and has been running 24/7 since then without a single day off line.
It is situated on the coast and is 190 metres asl and coverage is from Torquay, Devon (Southwest England) up to Portland in Dorset and over a large part of Dartmoor area. We are a Group of 20 members and self financing.
We have some members who cannot receive the 23cms from the Repeater because of the hills around this part of the Country. We have therefore set up duplex links on 13cms using comtech units. The longest link is 12.5km ( about 8 miles). One member receives the 23cms Repeater output and re-transmits it on 13cms and then feeds any 13cms back to the Repeater. we operate this system on 2.330mhz TX and 2.390mhz RX
The Repeater is due for a major upgrade as it is running on an Amiga 600 computer and home brew Logic. The RX is an EchoStar Sat Receiver and TX is a Homebrew Worthing Kit running 1 watt into a twin brick PA, giving an output around 25watts. Both TX and RX antenna are the Alford Slot type.
During the summer months we often get video and audio into the Repeater from Stations in Northern parts of France. As you can guess, we look forward to more Internet Repeater linking in order to broaden the interest and scope of ATV. Since we started streaming on the Internet our Repeater activity has increased, mainly because members can now check out their own signals into the Repeater via the Internet when doing equipment checks or setting up new transmitters.
I am sorry that you had a problem with the www.gb3tb.dyndns.tv site. On Saturday last (after giving you this info on the Friday) we had a major power failure in the whole town. It came back on and then went off several times and when finally power was restored we found the web server was faulty. We hope to have a replacement up and running by next weekend.
Last Friday, when we joined the boys at GB3GG, and yourself, we were very impressed with the Ustream.tv site.
I have therefore set up at streaming account at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/gb3tb-23cms-atv-repeater. and it is now up and running.
We intend to stream on Tuesdays, Thursdays (Group Activity Night) and Sunday evenings from 2000hrs until 2200hrs GMT.
We look forward to any info being published in your Newsletter and I have also put your e-mail address on our News Bulletin mailing list. Please feel free to pick out and use any items we circulate to our Group which you feel may be of Interest to others.

I received an email a very interesting email from WA6NUT. I had never heard of FFT-TV until he brouht it up. Here is his email:
Hello Bryon, N6IFU,
Congratulations on your ATV Newsletter (I look forward to each issue). And your "Everything you Wanted to Know..." book on ATV is very helpful, too.
Some of your readers, like myself, may live in rural areas where UHF ATV isn't possible (My QTH is in a valley at 8,000 ft. elevation in the Rockies). Fortunately for us, Con Wassilieff, ZL2AFP, has developed soundcard software, called "FFT-TV", for full-color video over HF. The frame rate is only 1 FPS (or less), but AVI clips can be sent and received over HF for playback at 10 FPS (giving smooth motion). The frame rate for "live" video can be increased by post-processing with frame interpolation software. Hardware requirements are the same as for SSTV. For more information and downloads, try these links:
ZL2AFP's page: http://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/ZL2AFP/
ZL1WTT's page: http://www.qsl.net/zl1wtt/nbtv.htm
WA6NUT's page: http://www.hamsdr.com/personaldirectory.aspx?did=1139
See you on HF with FFT-TV!
73, Rick, WA6NUT

This weeks Joke
Two guys are out hunting and one of them drops dead. The other calls 911 on his cell phone and explains to the emergency operator what happened. The operator says, "First we need to make sure your friend is dead". There is a pause and the operators hears two gun shots. And then the hunter says to the operator ..... OK what's next.
