Going back in history it emerged that packet needed didgipeaters. The
first of these used the Rose software and many mountain tops sprouted Rose
Digipeaters.
But along came a great competitor NETROM! (is that a swear word
Barry?)
And so it came to pass that digipeaters running Netrom sprouted all over
and even from ham QTH,s
Now came the war of the Roses with the proponents of each battling it
out on the grounds of simplicity versus legalities of netrom.
In the long past at a Gosford VK2 Field Day/Ham fest,(still the biggest
in VK) two opposing lecture rooms extolled the virtues of each system. It
was almost towards fisticuffs at forty paces!
Rose prevailed for many years and was highly successful but
needed to be run by a club on hill locations that eventually were
curtailed by the cost to clubs of site fees.
Netrom however is still existent and is the backbone of much
forwarding via netrom nodes around the world. Locally we have one at a
remote location ie VK2AMW-7.
