Oh I remember those primitive copiers and printers all too well. I don't
remember purple jelly but the mimeograph machines used purple toner, you
could get stoned just being in the room with one running. Then there were
blueprint machines, the big brother to the office mimeo that could get
you stoned just sitting there doing nothing. I don't know why they were
called blueprints, they weren't exactly blue. Then there were the office
copiers that used a photo-electrostatic process with black toner,
lampblack emulsion suspended in water and a little alcohol. That Nashua
printer must have been very poorly designed to get toner on the bench,
the copiers I worked with had the toner tank mounted in such a way it was
impossible to spill unless you were careless while filling it.
My first computer printer was a dot matrix type, due to its construction
I called it a pinhead or dot head depending on my mood at the time. Some
used a ribbon spool like a typewriter and some that came later used a
cartridge same as fancy office typewriters just before they went out of
style. They were the most annoying things printing even lines forward and
odd lines backward making a harsh buzzing noise as they went. Today's
printers are nearly silent and go a whole lot faster, thank goodness.
FYI, laser printers only use lasers to dry the ink, they're not involved
in the printing process at all. My only gripe about these modern marvels
is the high cost of ink, somebody's making a killing on this one.
You're still using a printer you paid $850 for? That thing must be
ancient, I'm surprised you can still get cartriges for it or it's even
still running for that matter. I've gone through several printers, sale
items run for $50 or just a tad more so it pays to replace rather than
repair or go hunting for NOS cartriges they stopped making. I ended up
with an HP J4580 printer/scanner/FAX combo that so far serves me well,
mostly scanning since I do rather little printing and no FAX at all. The
neat part is print resolution far greater than any of its predicessors
and I discovered a neat fact, behind glass the 8X10 photos I print on
plain paper look like color glossies. A ream of plain paper is dirt cheap
and I don't mind trimming the sheets down to fit the frames, even if I
louse one up I can always print another and think nothing of it.
