Re packet programs, my introduction to packet, was by a friend? giving
me a Commodore 64 computer for Packet Radio use. It was the first computer
I had really seen or touched and of course I knew nothing about programs.
However I took it up to Johanna Harris VK2KAA at Wahroonga ( quite a
famous lady amateur) and had her set it up for me, with a modem? (never
heard of one)
So she laboriously had me hit keys to set up the program (what is
that I asked) Anyway at the end of all that, she said "now just hit
return". I blindly asked what is return?!(oh she said "that key with Enter
on it"!
Then taking it home I connected it connected to a 2 metre rig (I
knew all about those) having got my ham license in 1948. So away the
setup went and started to spit out packet on the screen. But how to save
it? required a printer. So for an arm and a leg at that time I purchased a
printer, that one used with temperature sensitive paper.
I connected it up and away it went printing every thing on the
screen as it came in. This resulted me using all the paper I had. Wow!
how do I stop this infernal thing? Ok switch off the printer and ask Joe
for help.
However as the weeks went by, I conquered this 64 and was later
able to use it with a Commonwealth Bank modem, to download my accounts
etc. However when recently I told my bank contact about this, the young
person was credulous, that such things could be done before the Internet
was even heard of.
Later in my computer history, along came a Commodore computer that
had Dos on a large floppy and data created on another large floppy
alongside it. Also phone modems appeared and then came a long association
with Phone Bulletin boards often run by Amateurs!
   Them's were the days!!!
