since you re-compiled the kernel, are you sure about the following
kernel switch setup(?):
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS_COUNT=256
if that is your failure, than just re-compile... :)
Furthermore, to be sure that the 'slip' module exists,
just type:
modprobe slip
and then:
lsmod
to verify if that (slip) module resultes compiled too.
The 'sl0' kernel interface will be created ONLY
if the 'slattach' command is run without problems...
similar story as the 'kissattach' command...

Wanted starting JNOS 2.0 and there now I it can not install drivers and
modules, "slip", "sl0" etc.. it problem is from /dev/
I use CentOS 5.7, Kernel 2.6.18-274.el5-sp1lop, have problem from /dev/...
I write down command: slattach -s 38400 -p slip /dev/ptype &
and I have answer:
slattach: tty_open(/dev/ptype, RW): No such device or address
Can someone me prompt what I have bad ????
