Hi Bob and all,
Not quite another rant so I left that off. (;->) Sorry 'bout the
confusion, Ray VK2TV is the lineman, not I. Perhaps your HV transmission
lines don't span vast distances as ours often do, 330KV AC is a regional
feeder around here. When I mentioned DC I meant REAL EHV lines such as
the Niagara Interconnect that feeds Con Ed downstate NY and NYC with
1.5MV DC although lines at that voltage can also be AC not having been
upgraded. Why DC? Simply to avoid losses caused by mutual induction, it's
the voltage that carries be it AC or DC.
I've heard of canals and pipelines proposed to carry water into semi-arid
areas and the money politics involved. That's silly when one considers
the fact that New York City is supplied from upstate via a massive
underground gravity fed pipeline and another is under construction. Then
again California has its canals, probably many other water distribution
systems too that I don't recall at the moment. When it comes to dams we
have greenies in common chanting the same "save the fish, protect the
environment" mantra. Just another thing that doesn't make sense, for my
money go ahead and change the environment behind the dam from white water
to deep water, the fish don't care.
Oh we also use treated sewer water for irrigation, park lakes and various
other things where non-potable water may be employed. Take it one step
farther in purification and it becomes potable but the public will have
none of it and frankly I don't blame them... yuck.
It all started a long time ago with a popular folk song...
Green green, it's green they say on the far side of the hill
Green green, I'm going away where the grass is greener still
PLEASE DO!
