Hi Rod and readers,

I had a similar problem, tried several USB adapters and various drivers 
but still couldn't get my scanning radio software to go beyond a 
handshake. After wasting money and a lot of frustration I installed a 
dual COM port board, problem solved. Conclusion, hardware designed to 
work with a COM port doesn't like USB adapters.
