On this day in 1965, the first moves were made to introduce the
'Comprehensive' school system.
It was patently obvious that, as the majority of kids couldn't pass the
'11 Plus' exam to get into Grammar school and were also too thick to make
it into the technical colleges. Their parents would vote for a system
where schooling was not available on merit.

This led to a couple of problems, 1. many kids couldn't read even in their
late teens.2. Fewer kids were passing the university entrance exams
so,gradually, over the 70s and 80s, final exams were made simpler. The
Universities used to offer excellent, free degrees in the traditional
subjects but so many would be undergrads wanted the simpler Mickey Mouse
degrees like Modern Dancing and other loosely arts related subjects that
the universities were eventually forced to charge so we are now in a
oisition where the only kids who can get a good education are those who
can afford private schools and pay their way through University.

Countries need tomorrows scientists. 65% of them came from Britain but now
if the kids can't afford to get educated, then they will have to go and
get a poorly paid job as labourers - if they can find one.

All this is thanks to a new,Labour government on the 12/Jul/1965 which
decided to abolish streaming in schools.
