Today in 1948, Britain's national Health Service, providing free health
care for all began.
I remember my brother and I receiving innoculations/vaccinations against
measles,mumps and whooping cough, all free.
The idea of a Welfare State had been broached by Bevan to Winston
Churchill in 1942. Churchill replied "Over my dead body" sadly for
Churchill, he was voted out of office in 1945 and couldn't stop the
Welfare State.
His government, five years later and many succesive governments have tried
to demolish the NHS but, to do so would be political suicide.
Many attacks have been successful, like dentistry, while it still remains
free for children and the elderly, a lot of people have to pay.
Free ambulance transport for hospital appointments was scrapped by the
1980s and remains so except for emergencies.
