You missed a point in history, "another retired old guy". Today, in 1987,
Captain Phillip left England in charge of a fleet of ships on the way to
found the new colony of New South Wales. Sydney, where he landed the best
part of a year later, is now a city with close to 5 million population
with almost 1/4 of the population of the entire country.
My city on the western part of the south coast, founded in 1926  was part
of New South Wales until 1831 in spite of the fact that the Swan River
Colony had been settled in 1829.
