I don't want t start a nuclear debate but I must point out several things
about this report.
1. The writer seems to have preconceived ideas before even arriving at the
place.
2. "Devastation"? How many people were killed in the breakdown of the
plant? None?
3. How many people have been killed world wide in coal mine disasters, in
explosions in fuel (petrol and oil) installations? How many killed in the
Gulf debacle with its explosion and the pollution cause, still a serious
problem? Difficult to count but many thousands maybe millions. Those
plants were not nuclear but there is no call for us to abandon this type
of power except for "green" considerations. Nuclear power seems to be the
only completely "green" option.
4. There are nuclear power plants all over the world with only three
accidents one at least of whch was reported to be though lack of basic
safety precautions.
5. The present nuclear problem was caused by the fourth largest earthquake
ever recorded and the "utter devastation" was caused not by the nuclear
power plant breakdown but by the quake itself and by the tsunami that
followed.
Report these matters by all means but make sure the whole truth is told,
unvarnished by prejudice.

It is most unlikely that nuclear power stations are going to be closed
because of this accident except maybe this particular one which after all
has functioned for 40 years without mishap. It took an earthquake of
mindboggling proportions to cause this problem..

As Japan struggles to contain the world's second most catastrophic nuclear
power accident, the public here is calling for an alternative energy
model.
