Hi Pete and all,
Reading right along... I'm not one bit surprised you're feeling the pinch
along with everybody else. I say everybody because although the soccer
moms driving their SUV land cruisers in this rather affluent community
(How did this po' boy get here?) don't seem to care they don't seem to
realize that gasoline isn't the only fuel nor is its use limited to
private vehicles.
What I'm getting at here is aside from all non electric forms of
transportation being affected the hardest hit is the price of food. Just
about everything on the farms is fuel dependent and then there is
distribution, food costs more to produce, process and ship, all of it
being fuel dependent. Those of us on fixed incomes (no more annual COL
increase BTW thanks to Obama) really feel the pinch and have to
completely rethink our diets and spending habits. I'm paying a LOT closer
attention to unit prices at the supermarket these days.
For those who haven't noticed this goes back to the 70s when the dominoes
began to fall, first it was the unions and then management when industry
went offshore. Then out of what was left I had to change jobs in order to
get a raise in pay I could live with, the 3% national average is peanuts
in New Jersey and can't keep up with the rising cost of living. That's
how I became a jack of all trades and master of none but it did help the
BS factor and jot me jobs. When asked about experience I answered "yes"
but when it got my foot in the door it was on the job training that kept
me from being fired, I'm a fast learner. (;->)
Presently disabled and a few short years from full retirement age I'm out
of the job market but I pity those who have nowhere to go and nowhere to
get there. There is one huge contradiction I see every day, ads for
colleges and tech schools promising a bright future while on the other
hand it's McDonalds that's hiring. What tickles my funny bone is the ads
for paralegal training that natter on about law enforcement including the
phrase "You CAN make a difference." Yeah kid, I hope you like being a
gofer. (;->)
