Well Ian I guess we will all die from something but I can think of a lot
of things I could die from which I would prefer to lung cancer. I have
seen the process and it is a nasty way to die..
It's of no use ignoring the evidence and the statistics. The figure here
in my state show that 6000 in the state die from smoking related disease
each year. That is 20 times the road toll which receives so much
publicity.I believe the present number of smokers in this country is a
little over 20%, down from over 60%. Someone is getting the message.
As far as my genes are concerned my mother died at 87, my grandmother (her
mother) at 94. Others were in their 80s. They were non smokers. One uncle,
a smoker, lasted till his 70s and my grandfather to 73; he died a painful
death of throat cancer caused by pipe smoking.
Pardon me saying so but anyone who starts smoking these days knowing the
statistics and ignoring the warnings from science and medicine needs a
psychiatrist. Present company excepted of course!
As far as your weight gain is concerned I doubt whether there would be any
real medical evidence that giving up smoking caused weight gain to the
extent you describe. The reason would need to be properly investigated. I
have seen plenty of obese smokers.Like other obese persons they do not
have a long life. Most finish up with diabetes and/or heart problems. Some
lose toes or legs through the effect of smoking on circulation.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE, who seems to have stopped smoking before any real damage was
done and, strangely(?), did not gain weight!.

>as I stayed thin but when I got the massive weight increase with no extra
food, after 5 years, I decided to go to the gym a lot more and spent one
year living on soup - nothing worked, therefore the decision to start
buying the cheapest tobacco I could. The combination of smoking, eating
healthily and working out is keeping me at about 30 lbs more than I was
before the thyroid problem but a lot thinner than back in 2003. The
thyroxine helps but the Dr won't increase it too much as it can cause a
heart attack.
