Hi Bob & Pete.

I missed oit one thing in my bull: on purpose. The reason I suddenly got
very fat after 5 years of non smoking was that I developed hypothyroidism
and balloned up enormously.
My statistics before that were height 6'2". waist 34" 35" and weight
between 34" and 35" all inherited from my maternal grandfather who looked
like me and lived to 93.
He was well into his 60s when I was born and had smoked since a boy,
mostly a vile pipe tobacco called Twist but changed to cigarettes in his
70s.

I think that genes play a big part in a lot of things. In 1992 I had a
full DNA test, it cost 3,000 pounds and they had to take about 15cc of
blood.

I should imagine that now, a DNA test will probably be more like 300
Pounds and only need a swab from the cheek.

When the results eventually came back, the doctor told me " You have no
genes for any serious diseases, the only gene you have is for Rheumatoid
Artthritis and you haven't got that."

Naturally I was quite pleased about this. Even in 1992, they had isolated
the genes for all the serious diseases and even, homosexuality and
addiction, so it is easy to slag off smokers as being 'weak' but, if it is
an addiction, they can't help it. I don't find it too hard to stop
smoking. As I said in my bull: I had stopped previously for periods of
over 6 months
and gained weight even when I made sure I did not increase my food intake.

With the last one, I was pretty sure I would never smoke again especially
as I stayed thin but when I got the massive weight increase with no extra
food, after 5 years, I decided to go to the gym a lot more and spent one
year living on soup - nothing worked, therefore the decision to start
buying the cheapest tobacco I could. The combination of smoking, eating
healthily and working out is keeping me at about 30 lbs more than I was
before the thyroid problem but a lot thinner than back in 2003. The
thyroxine helps but the Dr won't increase it too much as it can cause a
heart attack.

I very minor problem I know, compared to some people I know and some
people on here.

Some people gave me a lot of stick. I remember one man I knew who had
never smoked who told me how bad it was and that I would die young. He has
been dead a couple of years now aged 58 so, maybe, not everybody dies from
smoking (?)

The UK anti smoking laws are severe but not as bad as Oz.....yet. That is
why I like my little trips to Holland where they have restaurants and bars
with a special smoking room, often with comfortable chairs and TV.

I think the Dutch are sensible in a lot of things as well as being
friendly with a dry sense of humour. I regret not going to live there when
I was still young enough to get a job, still, c'est la vie.

Take care and may your genes be healthy ones.
