Part of what Pete said to Bob:

> There is me and another ...well we want just to fit our jeans
> again. <g>....
That's me. I am not sure if I had put out abull about it at the tome but
something happened to make me horribly obese after stopping smoking for 8
years.

I tried dieting and going to the gym. Nothing worked then - three years
ago I was looking at some old photos where I noticed that, whenever I had
stopped smoking for a few months or even a year or two, I had got bigger,
not obese, just bigger so, after a lot of thought, I decided to start
smoking.

It worked better than I thought. After one month, a friend of mine said
" you look a lot thinner around the face and you only have one chin now."

I gave it a while before I risked weighing and measuring myself and was
pleasantly surprised to find I had loast 3 1/2 Stn = 49Lbs Ca 20kg and 7
ins off my waist = 16.8 cm.

I was already on a healthy diet and excercising and, with the combination,
I have lost even more since then.

I am to old to worry about being attractive to women but, to quote Pete,
it is nice to get into the old jeans I thought I would never wear again.

Just prior to starting smoking I had bought a suit for a wedding. One year
later it hung on me loosely and the trousers definitely needed a belt or
they would fall down.
I went out and bought another suit - a lot smaller all round.

On a more serious note, my doctor did some tests and was a bit puzzled
that my TSH is way down, so is my cholesterol and the diabetes test came
back showing me at zero chance of getting diabetes. MY BP is nice and low,
usually 120/75, O.K. for someone half my age.

As for Bob; if he has reached 88, he is beating the odds nicely, good luck
Bob, hope you reach the ton.

A friend of mine will be 88 soon but he tries to enjoy himself. He has
been with me to Amsterdam two years running and wants me to go again this
year.
We don't do anything wildly exciting but, he talked me into looking around
De Beers and goes in the Hard Rock Cafe. He might have to go on his own
this years as I am determined to get round to going to Toulouse to visite
Space City where they have all the ESA and Russian rockets as well as the
spare Mir space station used for training. I also want to look around
Aerospatiale where they make the Airbus as well as visiting the student
bars and Le Frog and Bifteck pub which, I hear is full of many
nationalities, mainly working for Rolls Royce and other aerospace
companies.

He is one of these people who just HATES the French so we might have an
argument as he won't go but. if I can afford it, I will and he will have
to tour Amsterdam on his own.

NB I'll probably stock up on cheap Gitanes and Gauloises while I'm there.
I know all the downsides of smoking, brnchitis, emphysemia, lung cancer etc
but give me a thin coffin over a fat one anytime. Smoking kills but so
does obesity.

I will now sit back and wait for the flak.........
