I know packet has declined from its apex, but it seems that it has
bottomed out and may be slowly recovering. In any event, why not help
it?

There is a reasonable amount of activity on both 20m and 40m here, and
I believe on 80m also though I lack any capbilities there. Why not
give it a try and see who it inspires to dig that old TNC out of the
close?

I'm not sure if your tone was intended to be sarcastic or serious, but
in any event the same could be said about amateur radio as a whole
(after all, we do have Skype and VOIP). And, in fact, I thought that
way for awhile, which is why I didn't get my ticket earlier. But I
realized that looking at everything from a purely utilitarian point of
view misses all the fun that is to be had with amateur radio. Packet
is no exception.
