N5VLZ:
GE All, and welcome to the Jan 12 2026 PCL
Net. No early checkins.
Net order is Daryl, Bob (NY), Carl, Rick,
and whoever else shows up.
I spent much of the weekend resetting my
Samsung smartphone, but I had to do it twice,
due to an error. I lost the games data, but
I can live with that. At least I was able to
get most of the medical data back. I also
figured a better way to back up data, so I
can get it back quicker. Basically, the phone
wouldn't load apps, make or receive calls
(instant hangup), but no signs of malware.
I got a new Contour diabetes app, as it's
covered by my HMO, if I end up being certified
as type 2 diabetic (I'm right on the edge of
it). The new app and meter has a lot of neat
features, including if I don't get enough
blood the first time, if I retest within 60
seconds, I can use the same test strip. I test
once daily, but if I become type 2, I will test
before every meal.
I spent nearly 8 hours doing Skywarn operations
last Thursday. Severe storms were in northwest
Arkansas, but a strong cap (layer of warm air
aloft) kept storms from developing here. They
had tornadoes in Louisiana, Mississippi, and
Alabama. It has been very dry; we haven't gotten
an inch of rain since Thanksgiving. All of
Arkansas is under moderate fire danger, with
increasing burn bans. It looks like we will have
rain late next week. Some of the wishcasters are
saying we will have a massive winter storm this
weekend, but I'll believe it when all the models
agree on such 5 days out. All the wishcasters
pick the most aggressive model run to use...I
hope they get egg on their face when nothing
happens.
Blue DV has been upgraded to version 1.0.0.9644.
I figured out how to work with APRS on there, so
I'm at either N5VLZ-G or N5VLZ-10, the latter
with the APRSIS32 program, and the one I use to
checkin to APRS Thursday, from 0000 to 2359 UTC
Thursday. I use BlueDV to checkin to most nets,
but use the SharkRF OpenSpot 4 Pro or the M1KE
to run them, as BlueDV doesn't pick up some
Icom rigs.
I added more stuff from the Amateur Radio Funnies
Facebook Group to the ham radio humor file. The
best one in recent days (obviously AI generated)
shows a bear holding a sign that notes "Will
explain the difference between GMRS and Ham Radio
for $5. Will stop talking about it for $10". That's
like the guy at Halloween, putting out the candy
machines where you put in a quarter, turn the knob,
and get some candy. Either way, the OM wants a new
radio (hi hi).
GE Bob, how was your week?? >>>

NS2B:
GE All!
This week flew by. WX started out snow covered. That
melted off, roofers came by, and replaced my roof.
Still have a deck rebuild on the agenda, but that'll
wait until a warmer day. Now it's snowing again.
My latest phone upgrade was the most painless I've
ever experienced. Went from an iPhone 13 to a 16E -
I literally laid them next to each other - when I
came back everything was on the 16, including all
data - it was awesome!
We made a run out to New Hampshire to drop a couch
off at MaryJo's son's place. 7 hours each way - my
butt got sore sitting so long!
I have an older Anytone D878-UV - it's supposed to
hold 200,000 contacts. But I think that's a like -
tried updating the contact list today with the North
America list, (141K or thereabouts) - radio started
acting wonky. So I guess I'll just operate on Talker
Alias now. I don't really care.
Speaking of GMRS - we have quite a GMRS community
around here - there's a couple of GMRS repeaters
within easy reach of an HT from my house. I get the
impression that the state or county actually finances
those repeater installations - but I don't know for
sure.
I've babbled enough - BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:
Bob, FB on the roof repair, and the phone upgrade.
I had to reload all the data for the BlueDV program.
On the sore fanny, I get that from sitting in the
chair so long...I'm not used to it...maybe I need
pillows or padding (hi hi).
GE Carl, how was your week?? >>>
**
KX4AC:
GE All. Had a pretty good start of the year. Charley
and I had a nice eyeball QSO at a diner called "Country
Boys." He showed me his Meshtastic tracker, so now I
had to go and get a couple of Meshtastic devices to
play with. Still trying to figure that out. I do see
a fair amount of activity around the area, so that
might be interesting.
I have not done anything with GMRS yet, but I do
remember the guy at Ham Radio Outlet indicating that
there was a fair amount of GMRS activity as well.
The weather has been really nice the last couple of
days. It really warmed up today, and so I sat out on
the porch for a bit. If it stays warm for the next
couple of days, I will need to grab the HT, and go
for a walk around the neighborhood.
I guess that's about it for now. Back to net >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Carl, glad you and Charlie got to have an eyeball
QSO. Bob (OK) has talked about the Meshtastic stuff,
but he hasn't been on here in awhile. I know very
little about GMRS.
Lots of flu and RSV around, and in some areas, Covid
has come back. With temperatures going up and down
so much, no wonder folks are sick. At least I don't
have to go out until next month, and I plenty of
food and drink until March.
GE Rick, been missing you..how are things going?? >>>
**
VA7RBP:
GE Daryl and all on the NET.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years!
We had to go to Kelowna on Dec 21 for Arlene's knee
replacement surgery. It went well, but it's taking a
long time for her to get back to better than normal.
She had the staples removed last Monday, and that
added to the pain. She has been getting around the
house pretty good, but I still have to do a lot of
assisting with the cooking (I burn water), housework,
laundry, grocery shopping, and all that stuff. Will
be at it for a while yet...
We haven't had much snow here this year, so far, just
lots of rain. Any snow is usually gone quick with the
rain.
I have managed to get in a bit of radio play with
PACTOR on 40M and 20M, but not a lot, just doing stuff
around the house...
One of the monitor for my PACKET node died, can't see
what my 20M PACKET is doing, so I shut off the radio,
so I don't accidently TX crap.. will have to get a new
monitor I guess.
When I'm not doing stuff around the house and assisting
Arlene, I have been reading. Once the Christmas expenses
are taken care of, I hope to pick up some Meshtastic
devices to play with.
Well, that's all I have to show for the past three or
four weeks, so BTU Daryl >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Rick, bummer on the monitor failure, and on the rough
time Arlene is having with the recovery, but I know
you both are glad she got it done. I'm the same at
burning water, and am heavily into microwave (oven)
communications (hi hi).
GE Charley, how was your week?? >>>
**
NT5R:
ge everyone
Hope holidays were good for all.
We headed toward Arizona before EARLY Dec 31 Week in
Phoenix area. Carl, awesome to meet you eyeball qso.
Hope you do again sometime, or maybe you back Missouri
way
Last year helped my garden buddy get his GMRS license
so also got one WWHY868. We have several repeaters in
Branson/Springfield area. Seldom hear anyone on them.
Did hear lot of GMRS activity around Phoenix/Mesa
including what sounded like some nets
Two in our local clubs really good with the Mesh stuff.
One fellow has several good YouTube videos posted.
Building a network in the area. Did see lot of Mesh
activity around Mesa area.
Daryl, interesting using BlueDV with the APRS. Have older
Anytone 868 and use Hoseline to monitor signal and read
names and callsigns
The Android transfer is similar to iPhone, can do wireless
or usb-c to c
Rick sending good vibes for your wife. My gal boils pans
dry so nearly burning water!
btu Daryl>>>

N5VLZ:
Charley, glad to you got to have an eyeball with Carl. I
have so much going on, I really don't have the time to
mess with GMRS.
The BlueDV program doesn't pick up some Icom rigs, but it
will pick up APRS traffic that APRSIS32 doesn't (scratching
head). I now export my data to the Samsung Cloud, so I can
get it back if needed. Boiling the pans dry is as bad as
leaving empty coffee pots on the burners...saw that many
times over the years...and those will shatter at times.
That's it for round 1...back to the top for final comments.
Bob, thanks for the use of the BBS...anything else?? >>>

NS2B:
nothing more here - everyone have a good week - 73 >>>
**
N5VLZ:
73 Bob, catch you next week.
Carl, anything else?? >>>
**
KX4AC:
Sorry, was a bit slow.
Not much more tonight. Was applying for GMRS license in
the background :-)
73s to all. See you next week. BTU >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Carl, I don't have the funds for a license or a rig right
now. Thanks for being here.
Rick, anything else?? >>>
**
VA7RBP:
That's it for me for this week. Everyone have a great week,
stay well, 73 until next time! BTU Daryl >>>

N5VLZ:
73 Charley, thanks for being here.
That will do it for tonight's net. I will post the scribe
