Open Invitation to All VK7 Amateurs

Grote Reber Museum and 3D Virtual Reality Cinema

The REAST Club invites all amateurs and their families to tour the Grote Reber Museum at the Mt Pleasant Radio Observatory at Cambridge.

The museum has many wonderful artefacts and information about amateur radio operator Grote Reber (SK) and his experiments mapping the Milky Way using HF from his square kilometre array at Bothwell along with radio astronomy displays and a 3D Virtual Reality Cinema where you can fly in 3D to the planets in the Solar System.

We will even have members from the Astronomical Society of Tasmania with their Solar Telescopes looking at the sun and seeing those elusive sun spots!

We have booked Saturday the 16th October 2010 starting at 1:00pm to allow interested people to time to travel down to Cambridge and travel back afterwards.

The cost will be $5 per person as we need to cover the opening of the museum after normal weekday business hours. The more we get may mean the cost will be less per person.

We can also organise vehicle pick-ups for those amateurs who cannot drive and would like to come along.

As they say in the advertising – "But wait there's more!!" The Astronomical Society of Tasmania and the University of Tasmania are holding and open night at the Mt Canopus Optical Astronomy Observatory on the night of the 16th of October and has invited us along. They will even have images from the 1 metre optical telescope being displayed along with many other types of telescopes looking at stars, planets and all sorts of astronomical features.

Please let me know if you are interested in attending the visit over the next couple of weeks so we can get an idea of the numbers.

I can be contacted on email: VK7TW(AT)wia.org.au or phone: 0439 016 622.

A great big thank you to Karen Bradford and Dr Stefan Deiter, the curator of the museum who have made this visit possible.

Northern News

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club

www.ntarc.net

With spring bringing warmer weather, the great winter hibernation comes to an end, and with it more outdoor activities become possible. If you've been looking to do something amateur radio related in the great out doors, there's a few events you might like to consider.

Firstly, Jamboree On The Air is coming up on the 16th and 17th of October. You might like to just help to set up some antennae or equipment, perhaps you'd like to be the friendly face that greets the next generation of potential amateur radio operators, or maybe you'd be more comfortable being an `out station' to chat to with from JOTA HQ. If you would like to help out with this, Tony VK7YBG and Ann VK7FYBG would love to hear from you.

Another event on the following weekend, Saturday 23rd of October is the WIA National Field Day. Visiting Launceston around this time will be Neil VK5ZEE, and he's quite keen to do have a public display & presentation at a prominent location. Get in touch with Jason VK7ZJA if you want to get involved with this.

Norm VK7KTN has come across a high current power switch mode power supply that could be adapted to amateur radio use. As it comes, the power supply is rated at 40 amps but is 20 volts. While this voltage might be just a little too `hot' for most equipment in your shack, by generating a clean 3.5 volt `reference' voltage and feeding that to the supply, its output will be a much more usable 13.8 volts. Norm thinks he'll have just a couple of these power supplies left from a bulk order made earlier in the week, so if you've been wanting a good high current power supply for the shack at an almost irresistibly low price, Norm is your go-to man for this.

With thanks from

(Jason VK7ZJA, NTARC Secretary)

WIA national Field day

The CCARC is planning to operate a field day station from the Ulverstone area on Saturday 23rd October 2010, as part of WIA National Field Day. Amateur radio enthusiasts from all over Australia will be showcasing amateur radio in prominent locations throughout the country. We hope to be able to talk to these other field day stations.

This activity will be a good opportunity to break out your field day equipment, demonstrate emergency preparedness, but most importantly engage the public. Most people in the general public would give our hobby a second thought, if they knew a little more about it. This is the opportunity to showcase our capabilities. So come along and see what you can do on the day and enjoy the CCARC hospitality.

More details will be announced closer to the date.

Regards from

(David, VK7DC, Secretary, CCARC)

ATV Experimenters Night

Another great night with a special guest Anne who came along to see what these crazy amateur TV experimenters got up to on a Wednesday night. Anne is looking to undertake the Foundation Licence assessment and has bought her foundation licence manual and madly studying, a big welcome to Anne.

And we had plenty of people come along and help out with our presentation this week. We started with a show and tell about the Voice Powered 80m CW transmitter from AA1TJ and then showed a couple of videos for our ATV audience of Michael Rainey using the transmitter. W had a discussion about using a Vuvuzela instead of the straight tin can wave guide to try and get more of the power of your voice onto the speaker diaphragm to generate more vibrations and therefore more current for the transmitter.

We then moved to our main video presentations which were on a theme of the International Space Station and the Shuttle and were sourced from NASA and YouTube.

One that got many comments was the 3 minute video called "Go for Launch" which is a time lapse over 6 weeks of preparing a shuttle for launch. This video shows the remarkable engineering that goes into every launch of the shuttle.

We go into recess for a week as next week is the presentation night and get back under way with our first transmissions of digital ATV.

YES, you heard right - after much delay the transmitter is about to be commissioned and will be available on 446.5MHz which most set-top boxes and Digital TVs will tune down to.

We get back underway on Wednesday 6th October at 7:30pm.

Hope to see you along.

ARISSAT-1 Undergoing Vibration Testing Prior to January Launch

AMSAT ARISSat Project Manager Gould Smith, WA4SXM reported this week that the ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf V satellite is currently under going vibration testing in Orlando, FL.

The shipping container for both satellites (flight unit and a back-up) will be built next week. These activities all lead up to the shipping of the two flight ready satellites to Houston, where NASA will be shipping the satellites to Russia at the end of the month.

Once in Russia the Kursk Experiment will be attached, additional testing done and then shipped to Baikonur for launch. ARISSat-1 is scheduled to launch to the ISS in January 2011 and scheduled to be manually released from the ISS during an EVA in February 2011.

Da Vinci's ornithopter takes flight

This story is sourced to the ABC Science Website and Reuters.

Centuries after Leonardo Da Vinci sketched designs of a giant bat-shaped craft that used a pilot's arms and legs to power the wings, Canadian engineering students say they have flown an engineless aircraft that stays aloft by flapping its wings like a bird.

International aviation officials are expected to certify next month that "The Snowbird" has made the world's first successful, sustained flight of a human-powered ornithopter.

The Snowbird sustained both altitude and airspeed for 19.3 seconds, in an 2 August test flight near Toronto that was witnessed by an official of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, the University of Toronto announced.

The aircraft weighs just 42 kilograms, but has a wing span of 32 metres, which is comparable to that of a Boeing 737 airliner.

A tow car helped The Snowbird lift clear off the ground, but then the pilot took over, using his feet to pump a bar that flaps the wings - giving it the look of a somewhat drunken bird, according videos of the August event.

The ornithopter's 19.3-second qualifying flight covered a distance of 145 metres at an average speed of 25.6 kilometres per hour, although the day ended with a broken drive line that has since grounded the aircraft.

The Wright brothers' first powered flight in 1903 lasted 12 seconds and covered 37 metres.

For more information and video take a look at the full story at the link on the email and internet editions of this broadcast.

White power LED achieves 200 lumen per watt

Cree, Inc. announces another industry-best reported efficacy record of 208 lumens per watt for a white power LED. Cree's tests confirmed that the LED produced 208 lumens of light output and achieved 208 lumens per watt efficacy at a correlated colour temperature of 4579 K. The tests were conducted under standard LED test conditions at a drive current of 350 mA at room temperature.

While this level of performance is not yet available in Cree's production LEDs, the company claims to continue to lead the industry with the broadest family of high-performance LEDs.

The world's smallest electric motor is now even smaller

Last year Elektor reported on the smallest hand-made miniature electric motor. Now, thanks to improved and refined production methods and production tooling, Jos d'Haens has succeeded in further reducing the size of the motor, which was already good for a world record last year, so much that its volume could be reduced from 1.9 mm3 to 0.9 mm3 (or more precisely, 1.30 x 0.65 = 0.863 mm3), which breaks the `psychological barrier' of 1 mm3. In order to achieve this, a small CNC machine tool was developed for drilling the holes in the motor end plates (hole diameters 0.3 mm and 0.1 mm). Thanks to improved polishing of the shaft and rhodium plating of the bearings, it was possible to increase the speed to the range of 10,000 to 12,000 rpm.

In the meantime, a new control circuit has also been developed as an alternative to the original combination of a 555 IC and a 4018 IC. Now a programmed ATtiny13 microcontroller handles this task. This makes driving the motor a good deal easier, but the original method is still preferable for high speeds because it allows the frequency to be ramped up more gradually

This is an impressive achievement, which is bound to be rewarded by a new certificate from Guinness World Records. For a picture take a look at the link in email and internet edition.
