Open Invitation to All VK7 Amateurs
Grote Reber Museum and 3D Virtual Reality Cinema
The REAST Club invites all amateurs and their families to tour the Grote Reber Museum at the Mt Pleasant Radio Observatory at Cambridge.
The museum has many wonderful artefacts and information about amateur radio operator Grote Reber (SK) and his experiments mapping the Milky Way using HF from his square kilometre array at Bothwell along with radio astronomy displays and a 3D Virtual Reality Cinema where you can fly in 3D to the planets in the Solar System.
We will even have members from the Astronomical Society of Tasmania with their Solar Telescopes looking at the sun and seeing those elusive sun spots!
We have booked Saturday the 16th October 2010 starting at 1:00pm to allow interested people to time to travel down to Cambridge and travel back afterwards.
The cost will be $5 per person as we need to cover the opening of the museum after normal weekday business hours. The more we get may mean the cost will be less per person.
We can also organise vehicle pick-ups for those amateurs who cannot drive and would like to come along.
As they say in the advertising – "But wait there's more!!" The Astronomical Society of Tasmania and the University of Tasmania are holding and open night at the Mt Canopus Optical Astronomy Observatory on the night of the 16th of October and has invited us along. They will even have images from the 1 metre optical telescope being displayed along with many other types of telescopes looking at stars, planets and all sorts of astronomical features.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending the visit over the next couple of weeks so we can get an idea of the numbers.
I can be contacted on email: VK7TW(AT)wia.org.au or phone: 0439 016 622.
A great big thank you to Karen Bradford and Dr Stefan Deiter, the curator of the museum who have made this visit possible.

Northern News
Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club
www.ntarc.net
Sometimes we amateur radio operators take what we do for granted.
That's why, from time to time, its good to raise our public profile just a little, and show others what we do, how we do it, and the enjoyment we get from this hobby.
With that in mind, the WIA has arranged a National Field Day for Saturday the 23rd of October, to raise public awareness of amateur radio. Neil VK5ZEE will be holidaying in Launceston on this date, and wonders if any other amateur radio operators would like to join him at a high profile public location to run a display and operate a station to contact other National Field Day stations.
The location Neil has in mind has excellent line of sight to NTARC's premier repeater VK7RAA, so IRLP contacts could be used, but there is also plenty of room for an HF antenna or two, and there may even be mains power available to use.
If this sounds like something that you'd like to get involved in, better get in touch with Jason VK7ZJA by Wednesday, and we will put you in touch with Neil to make arrangements.
With thanks from
(Jason VK7ZJA, NTARC Secretary)

Next Meeting
Members are advised that the next meeting of the Cradle Coast Amateur Radio Club will be held on Saturday, September 25th, 1.30pm at the Penguin lions club rooms, 19 Ironcliff road, Penguin.

New Amateur
The CCARC would like congratulate Adam Brown on passing his foundation licence exam at Forth on Sunday last week. He has applied to get the callsign VK7FAWB and we look forward to hearing Adam when he receives his new callsign. If you hear Adam then please make him welcome to the bands.

WIA national Field day
The CCARC is planning to operate a field day station from the Ulverstone area on Saturday 23rd October 2010, as part of WIA National Field Day. Amateur radio enthusiasts from all over Australia will be showcasing amateur radio in prominent locations throughout the country. We hope to be able to talk to these other field day stations.
This activity will be a good opportunity to break out your field day equipment, demonstrate emergency preparedness, but most importantly engage the public. Most people in the general public would give our hobby a second thought, if they knew a little more about it. This is the opportunity to showcase our capabilities. So come along and see what you can do on the day and enjoy the CCARC hospitality. More details will be announced closer to the date.
Regards from
(David, VK7DC, Secretary, CCARC)

A quantity of used and surplus two way radio equipment and accessories have been kindly donated to the Club by Graeme VK7AQ.
Among the goodies are RT85's & PRM8030's models, to name a couple, plus other miscellaneous bits and pieces. The Club will make some of these available to members for a small donation at it's next general meeting on Saturday 2nd October 2010 to be held at Ross VK7WP's QTH.
It is anticipated that some RT85's will be kept for another 6metre Conversion day project.

Southern News
WICEN Tasmania (South)
http://tas.wicen.org.au/
HF Radio saves WICEN Operator from possible fatality and an Amateur's toolkit came to the rescue.
An incident last weekend, at a horse endurance ride, clearly highlighted how Amateur Radio can assist in desperate situations.
It's thought that children playing with firebrands, sticks poked into an open fire until they burn, then running around with them, spooked two horses held in temporary pens. The horses crashed through the fencing and spooked more horses until about fifteen were galloping through the camp site and places beyond, in some cases dragging their rugs and other tackle behind them. The last of the runaways was recovered at two in the morning fifteen kilometres away.
Gary VK7JGD had his tent pitched between his vehicle and a fence. One of the runaways galloped through the narrow gap between the tent and the fence placing a flashing hoof on the tent right where Garry's pillow was, and head would have been had he not been sat in his vehicle on a late HF listening watch. A second horse tried to go through the same gap but became entrapped with two hooves through one square of the heavy fence mesh and lay on its side thrashing about only a centimetre from Garry's now collapsed tent. Fortunately, Roger VK7ARN had his side cutters to hand and was able to test the German made cutters by cutting through the heavy gauge fence wires and releasing the frantic horse, which galloped off into the night.
WICEN Tasmania (South) will be conducting a risk minimisation study to safeguard members from any future horse stampedes.

ATV Experimenters Night
Despite the Mercury clock saying it was 4 degrees when I went through Hobart and the wind was building to storm force the intrepid ATV operators where in the ATV studio along with our support staff, switchers, floor managers, camera operators and presenters.
Justin VK7TW started with some excerpts from the latest Australia Star and Telescope Magazine where there was an article about research in to stars similar to our sun throughout the universe that exhibit similar cycles to our sun's solar cycles.
Researchers are looking at the irradiance of particular wavelengths of light emanating from these stars are over the 12 years of research have seen similar patterns to our own Sun.
Our main video presentation was our recent tour of the ABC TV and Radio studios with Jim Parish and Damien Styles VK7HDS and some of the Dayton 2010 AMSAT presentations.
We have done much work in the studio to upgrade our studio lighting and this has resulted in a brighter flatter white light using tri-phosphor fluros that provide much greater contrast and brightness to the transmission.
This week we will have some great videos showing Michael Rainey AA1TJ using his voice powered 80/20m CW transmitter that was described last week. Michael has logged many contacts up to 1486km and calls it the "New England Code Talker" after the Navaho Code Talkers in WW2.
We will also be playing some more episodes of AmateurLogic.tv.
We get underway again next Wednesday night around 7:30pm and we broadcast on 444.25MHz analog ATV which is just below SBS on the UHF TV band.

Hope to see you along.

ACMA News
New UHF Citizen Band radio equipment standard
The ACMA is seeking public comment on a draft UHF Citizen Band (CB) equipment performance standard Radiocommunications (UHF CB Radio Equipment) Standard 2010. It is intended that the existing standard will be revoked and replaced with the proposed standard on 1 January 2011.
From April 2008 to April 2010, the ACMA reviewed the arrangements for the radiofrequency spectrum in the 400 MHz band, which incorporates the UHF CB band. As a result of the review the ACMA decided to restructure the UHF CB band into eighty 12.5 kHz wide channels from the existing forty 25 kHz wide channels.
The proposed standard provides performance limits and test methods for 12.5 kHz channel operation in the UHF CB band, which will transition to 12.5 kHz channel operation over the period 1 January 2011 to 1 January 2016.
To assist with the transition to 12.5 kHz channelling the new standard is proposed to provide grandfathering arrangements for current 25 kHz channel equipment.
Submissions should be provided by close of business on 12 October 2010.
For a copy of the revised standard and information about making a submission take a look at the link on the email and internet editions of this broadcast.

Closest Encounter with Jupiter until 2022
Been outside at midnight lately? There's something you really need to see. Jupiter is approaching Earth for the closest encounter between the two planets in more than a decade--and it is dazzling.
The night of closest approach is Sept. 20-21st. This is also called "the night of opposition" because Jupiter will be opposite the sun, rising at sunset and soaring overhead at midnight. Among all denizens of the midnight sky, only the Moon itself will be brighter.
Earth-Jupiter encounters happen every 13 months when the Earth laps Jupiter in their race around the sun. But because Earth and Jupiter do not orbit the sun in perfect circles, they are not always the same distance apart when Earth passes by. On Sept. 20th, Jupiter will be as much as 75 million km closer than previous encounters and will not be this close again until 2022.
http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/15sep_jupiter/
(Written by Dr. Tony Philips on the Science (AT) NASA website)
For us in the Southern Hemisphere Jupiter will rise in the east and be highest in the Northern Sky around midnight then follow the Moon disappearing out the Western sky. Definitely worth a look through binoculars or a telescope.
