Plans for Heard Island VK0-H underway
The Australian territory Heard Island, an uninhabited sub-Antarctic island in the Southern Indian Ocean is being targeted for a DXpedition in February 2013.
Heard Island is in the top ten of the world's most wanted DX entities.
DXpedition team leader Chris Dimitrijevic VK3FY, and co-leader Steve Chamberlain
VK6IR have announced that the planning phase for Heard Island 2013 has begun.
A total of 13 operators are proposed to activate the island for two weeks.
Chris VK3FY has already had discussions with the office of the relevant Australian Government Minister and submitted an application for Ministerial approval.
An appropriate ship for this journey has been sourced and negotiations have begun with its owners.

Open Invitation to All VK7 Amateurs
Grote Reber Museum and 3D Virtual Reality Cinema
For the October REAST presentation we have booked the a visit to the Grote Reber Museum at the Mt Pleasant Radio Observatory at Cambridge.
The museum has many wonderful artefacts and information about Grote Reber and his experiments mapping the Milky Way using HF from his square kilometre array at Bothwell.
We have booked Saturday the 16th October 2010 starting at 1:00pm to allow interested people to time to travel down to Cambridge and travel back afterwards.
The cost will be $5 per person as we need to cover the opening of the museum after normal weekday business hours. The more we get may mean the cost will be less per person.
We can also organise vehicle pick-ups for those amateurs who cannot drive and would like to come along.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending the visit over the next couple of weeks so we can get an idea of the numbers.

It was lovely to see all the regulars at Monday's coffee gathering at Lo Ena café to bid Naomi farewell. While the new owners get settled in, perhaps members would like to make the short but scenic drive out to see David VK7YUM and Norma VK7FOOD at Lilydale for this Monday instead?
NTARC members would like to wish Lois, XYL of Peter VK7PL, a speedy recovery after some recent surgery. Hope you're up and about soon Lois, and that Peter is taking extra good care of you during your convalescence.
Time has really slipped away in the last few weeks, and would you believe that it's the NTARC monthly meeting time again this Wednesday? As usual, we're looking to get underway at 7.30, at the B block of the Alanvale Tas Skills Institute campus. This month Jason VK7ZJA will be talking about radar & stealth technology. Jason will also bring along a small Doppler radar to demonstrate, and discover just how `stealthy' everyday objects might be. Jason invites you to bring along your own objects to experiment with too; anything that can be rolled or thrown into a radar beam would be suitable. Should be a fun evening, hope to see you there.

Grant Broadcasters buys TasRadio's old frequency in Launceston
In a knock-on effect from last week's Open Narrowcast licence auction, Tasmanian Broadcasters' parent company Grant Broadcasters has announced that it has entered into an agreement with racing station Tasradio Pty Ltd to acquire the second commercial radio licence in Launceston, subject to satisfaction of a number of conditions.
Tasradio was the successful bidder for the narrowcasting radio licence for Launceston last Thursday, which means that it will remain a presence in the Launceston market, but does not need its other frequency.
The acquisition will give Grant Broadcasters the opportunity to broadcast a second music-based commercial radio station in Launceston, "delivering a broader range of radio formats for audiences and advertisers."

Members are advised that the next meeting of the Cradle Coast Amateur Radio Club will be held on Saturday, September 25th, 1.30pm at the Penguin Lions club rooms, 19 Ironcliff road, Penguin.
This weekend the CCARC will be operating the VK100WIA callsign from the Devonport Maritime Museum. Our use of the callsign will begin at 10am today, Sunday, September the 5th and end at 0959 Wednesday the 8th. We have the use of the call for three days and will be operating from the maritime museum from 10am to 4pm daily and then from member homes after hours.
Winston VK7EM, Anne VK7BYL, Wayne VK7FWAY and Scott VK7FTTT have volunteered to make sure that the call gets plenty of air time after hours.
Members of the public and other amateurs are encouraged to call in and see what is going on, and have a look through the museum too. The address is 6 Gloucester Ave, Devonport

Due to interference problems on the repeater input at Table Cape (438.650mHz), there is now need to transmit CTCSS 141.3hz to access the UHF repeater. This is a permanent change.

Meeting Report
A large quantity of used and surplus two way radio equipment and accessories have been kindly donated to the Club by Graeme VK7AQ. Among the goodies are RT85's & PRM8030's models, to name a couple, plus other miscellaneous bits and pieces. The Club will make some of these available to members for a small donation at it's next general meeting on Saturday 2nd October 2010 to be held at Ross VK7WP's QTH.
It is anticipated that some RT85's will be kept for another 6Meter Conversion day project.
Persons in the N/West Area of VK7 interested in Training and Assessments for all classes of Amateur Radio are advised that the Club can provide all these requirements and in addition provision of Facilitators via the Radio and Electronics School if candidates so desire.
Potential candidates and interested persons should note that these facilities can be conducted at a central location within the North West.

ATV Experimenters Night
Another great night with a special hello to Anders VK7FAJM and TFS Comms friend Damien who came along to see what we got up to at an ATV night.
Our show and tell was a modern 100W HF Power Amplifier complete with built in ATU. This module is being built into a HPSDR by Justin VK7TW to provide higher output power.
Then it was onto the main video presentation which was the video made of the ISS contact with Sout and AMSAT News Service.
A story appearing at SpaceMart.com section of SpaceDaily.com (http://tinyurl.com/32lxyjo) on August 27 described the success of the first ESA CanSat competition.
High school students from different ESA Member States were able to watch their own 'satellites' soar into the sky aboard suborbital rockets during the first European CanSat competition, held at the Andoya Rocket Range in Norway.
The CanSat competition, organised by ESA's Education Office and the Norwegian Centre for Space-related Education (NAROM), was open to teams of at least four students, assisted by a teacher or tutor.
The selected teams had to build their own small CanSat 'satellite' in six months, with each team developing an experiment that would fit inside a 350 ml soft drink can. These investigations ranged from calculating variations in Earth's magnetic field and tracking the Sun, to measuring solar radiation and levels of carbon dioxide.
The most exciting day was 17 August, when the students were able to watch five Intruder rockets launch their CanSats from Skarsteindalen, a former military facility close to Andoya Rocket Range. The mini-payloads soared to an altitude of 1 km before parachuting back to Earth.
The culmination of the competition was the prize ceremony on 18 August, when the expert jury announced the results of its evaluation of the projects and selected the three winning teams:
+ The bronze award went to the Brussels Vikings team from Sint-Pieterscollege Jette in Belgium.
+ The silver award went to the Irish team Triailliu from Laurel Hill School.
+ The gold award winners were 'Team Eclipse' from St Paul's School in London, United Kingdom.
A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a regular soft drink can. CanSats offer unique opportunities for students to experience their first real space-related project. The participating countries in the first competition were Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.
The European CanSat competition is one of many ESA hands-on initiatives to inspire young people to follow a career in science or engineering. In this way, it is hoped to ensure the availability of a highly qualified work force in the space industry of the future.
One of the primary objectives of the competition is to promote the CanSat concept in ESA Member States. Similar competitions already exist in some ESA Member States and ESA is seeking to support additional CanSat activities from 2011.
