Hi Peter

Thank you for writing this. It is interesting to see other people's
perspective. In general, I agree with what you have said.

I guess the question is, "How do we undo some of this?"

I have tried the Cathedral approach, "Build it and they shall come".
This hasn't been overly successful. I have even tried giving people a
complete station only to have it end up in the box I gave it to the guy in.

I seem to recall Rod VK2DOT having a similar problem even to the point
where he rounded up spare computers and gave them to people, only to
find that the computers ended up being put to other uses.

I have even had some outright opposition to what I have been doing. It
was suggested by ARES people that Packet BBSs are of no use to EMComm
because they are too complicated to run.

On the other hand I am thrilled with the extension to our network that
has been added by Gil VE3BHA. He contacted me and asked how to extend
my NODE to him over the Internet, so that he could make RF connections
to VE3STP and VE3NRR up the Ottawa Valley from him. Perhaps this will
inspire more interest and enable us to add an RF link between Gil and
myself.

I am also actively working with a group testing the new BPQ BBS software
written by John Wiseman G8BPQ. Work is still being done on some of the
other BBS software too.

Then just yesterday I received a call via Echolink from CHIN, 9M2CW in
West Malaysia, who during our discussion expressed an interest in
getting his old packet system running again.

So Peter there is always hope.

Thanks again for the interest and views on packet.
