Thanks Cap:
I used to belong to the BPQ32 Yahoo Users group as well. But, as I
came to the conclusion that BPQ32 (for me) still left a lot to be desired
in a BBS, I discontinued using it, and cancelled my subscription to
the users group.
After leaving BPQ32, I briefly used JNOS 2.0 for linux, but it also had
bugs, so I dropped it and went back to WinFBB.
What Jerry N9YLA is referring to is my NNTP (UseNet) Newsgroup feed.
I (and some others as well) have my packet BBS linked to my own Newsgroup feed.
Packet users on my system can also send messages out to the newsgroup feed.
I have had both compliments from hams for re-reinstating an old cross-posting
method, as well as those who have no use for it.
With all good comes some bad.
Now, as for the bulletins coming into my station, all 100% are held for my review.
The NNTP newsgroups are known for the foul language and direct flaming of others.
The newsgroups I cross connect to are all ham related or general humor.
There was a technical change made recently to my station that 'could' have allowed
some postings to go out on packet unchecked.
Thus the "law of unintended consequences".
If I knew which postings Jerry was referring too, I could go back and review them
to see if there is a "leak" in the holding schemes I built into FBB.
As for others that wish to 'block' my NNTP newsgroup messages I suggest the following,
IF YOUR STATION HAS THE CAPABILITY !! (FBB has it. I don't know about others)
First, the Newsgroup feeds from me all carry a BID starting with MA1L.......
Next, they all belong to the feed of @WW, and lastly all start with the letter N
Misc items would look like 'NMISC@WW' BID MA1L.......
DX items look like 'NDX@WW' BID MA1L.......
and so on
So, at least FBB users can filter these feeds by using these 3 items to
'lock and block' these messages while still allowing for other @WW from my station
to still pass through.
Now, I have seen at least three other stations that import/export newsgroup feeds
as well. I could not tell you how they configure their stations, so I can not tell
you how to filter those messages.
Newsgroup feeds are nothing new. They were used quite often on packet back in the
days when packet frequencies were jam packed and it was fighting room only for
BBS stations. In fact, the software that I use was written by a ham specifically
for this reason and for email to packet, and packet to email. But, only on the WinFBB platform.
I know JNOS 2.0 can do the same as well.
So, while some may not care for the newsgroup feeds, others still use them quite routinely.
As for BPQ32, it does sound like a good feature request for John to think about.
I know he has a lot going. But a filtration system is (IMHO) a necessary item to a BBS station.
Please feel free to re-post this back on the BPQ32 yahoo reflector,
and I will also post it on packet as well.
I will also CC it to Jerry so he and I can work together to pick out the messages
he thinks shouldn't be there. He may be right, and I might need to go hunting for a
leak in the filters I have in place.
