VK7 REGIONAL NEWS BROADCAST

FOR SUNDAY 11th OCTOBER 2009

---------------------------------------------------------------------

VK7 Regional Broadcast

Would you like to be involved?

Last week we heard of the almost super human feat of Tony VK7YBG and Anne VK7FYBG braving the elements that the top of Mt Barrow could throw at them to fix VK7RAA and get the broadcast out.

Well, we were very appreciative of this great effort but this is not what we are expecting all the time from our great regional broadcast team…HIHI.

In fact if you listen to the broadcast each Sunday morning on anything from 160m through to 10m or a repeater and you have thought to yourself…"I think I help out every so often"…..then I would love to hear from you.

There are always gaps in the broadcast roster and I am currently putting together the 2010 roster and it would great if we can get a few more people involved and take the load off our team even if it's only once a month.

All you need to do is put the broadcasts to air on the relevant frequency and take some callbacks at the end of proceedings and send them through to the broadcast reader either on air or email.

I even have patch boxes, PCBs, kits and components for a very small cost if you would like to give it a go and connect the output of your VHF rig to your HF rig and do a broadcast once in a while.

If you are interested then either contact myself or let the rebroadcaster know who you are currently listening to and they will let me know.

OK that's enough broadcast administrivia, now it's on with the news.

Northern News

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club

Don't forget that this Wednesday night is the meeting night at Tranquility Gardens for all those that have put their name down to come along. See you there at 6.30pm.

In November, we'll have a very special presentation by Rex VK7MO and Justin VK7TW with the latest developments with their optical communications equipment. The latest development of this equipment is right at the cutting edge in this field, and looks like it will soon be able to make a contact across Bass Strait.

Sneaking up quickly is JOTA on 17th & 18th. This year JOTA will be operating from several different locations. Saturday between 12 and 6pm will have a station at Tasmanian Skills Institute at Alanvale active, while on the Sunday two stations will be operating, one at Perth the other at Carnacoo near Paper Beach. If you can assist with setting up or operating at any of these venues, please let us know as soon as possible.

There has been an idea raised that we make a regular informal gathering at VK7YUM David's cafι at Lilydale on the last Monday of each month. What do members think about this? Have a think about it and let us know at the dinner meeting. See you all there.

Thanks from

(Jason VK7ZJA NTARC Secretary)

WICEN Tasmania (South) Inc

http://tas.wicen.org.au/

A Celebratory Lunch

They say that if you can think of three reasons to do something, then it must be a good idea.

Therefore, WICEN South, Inc. along with its supporters, a.k.a. XYLs and other friends be they Amateurs or listeners, are going out to lunch.

The reasons?

There is a newborn link into VK7RAD/RHT on the air. His name is VK7RBI and he lives at Alonnah on Bruny Island. He has fair air and responds to 147.3 MHz, with a 114.8 Hz tone. His adoptive parents (RHT and RAD) are said to be "over the ionosphere" at the news.

It is coming up to Christmas and we need to have a practice eat.

It is twelve months since our last such event.

The venue this time is the RIVERVIEW INN in Lower Sandy Bay, just a kilometre or so south of Blinking Billy Point. See the recent MERCURY write-up.

We have surveyed several eateries and feel that this one deserves our close attention.

We are assured of a good feed, just ask VK7AY- Don, or his brother.

We have determined that the menu is varied and the prices are good in comparison.

They are not normally open at this time. So come on, help us make it a feast.

When? Saturday 28 November, 12:00 for 12:30.

However, we would like to know if you are coming, so please contact any WICEN member by 18th of November, or earlier so that we can notify the Inn.

November Presentation

REAST's November the 4th presentation is titled - The fun of portable HF antennas, theory and practice and this presentation will be from Phil Barnard VK7JJ.

Phil and Lyn (VK7FLYN) have travelled all over the place and operated mobile most of the time so, Phil will be bringing his vast experience to us.

In Phil's words the presentation....

"will cover a lot of ground, it will be fast moving and it will be fun, and it would include a squid pole but because lots of people have already done their squid poles I suggest not getting too boring with that."

Wednesday November 4 starting at 8pm.

See you there.

REAST ATV Experimenters Night

We get back underway this Wednesday night with some great show and tell and videos in store.

Our on-air session show and tell will be a demo of the many "other" uses for the Grid Dip Oscillator around the shack.

An earlier session we showed how to use a GDO for resonating inductors and calculating values.

We will then show some great video presentations from the Solar & Heliospheric - STEREO satellite thanks to Roger VK7ARN for the link to this site.

This will be followed by some NASA 25th Anniversary videos thanks to Paul VK7FPAH.

We will be continuing to prepare the new ATV studio and hanging some of the conduit to provide structured cabling paths around the studio.

See you on Wednesday around 7:30pm for another night of great experimenting and ATV.

History News

Galileo's invention of the astronomical telescope and his remarkable discoveries: moons, stars and a new planet

As part of the Year of Astronomy lecture series the Tasmanian Branch of the Australian Institute of Physics has been hosting some very interesting public lectures.

Last Tuesday night lecture was given by Professor David Jamieson from the University of Melbourne and it was fascinating.

As an aside one of David Jamieson's specialities is in the field of nano-technology, especially quantum computer technology and microanalysis. He is also interested in power and energy in the climate change debate.

Back to the actual lecture. I gather the Professor has an interest in historical science and science education and one area he has been studying is the original discoveries of Galileo 400 years ago.

Professor Jamieson started the lecture with a description of Galileo being the one to move science from the medieval into the enlightened period and he very much represents the new science based on evidence. >From around 1539 the view was that the earth was very much in the centre of the universe and everything went around it. This was very much supported by the all powerful Catholic church at the time.

1589 Galileo was Professor of Mathematics at Pisa and had access to the famous glass makers of Pisa which lead him to create his famous telescope. The telescope back in those days was called the "Perspicilli". He corresponded regularly with Kepler another great mind of the time.

He spent years observing through his telescope the four largest moons of Jupiter which these days are called the Galilean Moons. He established that the moon orbited Jupiter and not the Earth. He also discovered the "ears of Saturn" which turned out to be the rings of Saturn. He also discovered that the crescent on Venus changed as it moved around the sky (the Sun) also leading him to the conclusion that it did not go around the earth.

To set the precedent of discovery and make sure that no one else had discovered the same thing, Galileo sent anagrams to Kepler which apparently drove Kepler up the wall as he knew that Galileo had made another great discovery but he did know what until he could decipher the anagram. Galileo also observed sunspots using the telescope projecting onto a card.

The telescope really did change our view of the world and it was two small pieces of glass which gave a magnification of about 20 which is the equivalent of seeing a 20 cent piece at 20km.

Professor Jamieson then went into some of Galileo's notebooks and showed his meticulous note taking including some interesting observations of other stars and a planet in early January 1613. Galileo knew it was a planet as it was moving against fixed stars from night to night. Scholars have modelled the sky around the same period that Galileo made these observations and it turns out to be Neptune. So Galileo may well have discovered 234 years earlier than it was discovered the planet of Neptune.

Professor Jamieson has a collaborative research project that has just got access to Galileo's original notebooks and they are preparing to do particle beam accelerator test using a proton beam to get an induced xray spectra to measure the trace elements in Galileo's ink. They have a cheque book of Galileo's that has a day by day entry with the ink he used and the trace elements change over time and they are able to get a trace element signature in time from the cheque book and compare this to other entries in his notebook so they know when the entries in the note book were made. This may given them a hint as to whether he actually went back to an earlier entry in a notebook and put a mark for Neptune when he realised that it was actually a planet not a star.

Stay tuned for the results of this fascinating collaboration.

This was a great lecture from a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker.

Professor Jamieson also brought along a replica of Galileo's telescope and setup a scale picture of Jupiter and the moons on the back wall of the lecture theatre to give an idea of what Galileo would have looked at each night and compared to my little 4.5" reflector telescope it was very blurry and very small and yet it changed the world!

DXpedition News

VHF/UHF/Microwave DXpedition to Norfolk Island (OC-005) (RG30XX).

3rd January - 14th January 2010.

A team of experienced VK amateurs is heading to Norfolk Island this January to operate bands from 6 metres to 10GHz. The team from the VK Microwave Group, will be Alan VK3XPD, Kevin VK4UH and Michael VK3KH. Preparation and preplanning is progressing well with accommodation and airfares already booked. As with most remote operations the airfare cost and arrangement are the most difficult part, particularly as the group plans to take a 1.2 metre dish for all bands from 1296MHz through to 10GHz.

A group of VK5 and VK3 operators has organised to travel to Port Macquarie on the NSW coast, with full Microwave gear, to take advantage of the opportunity. A number of ZL operators have also indicated their interested in setting up at favourable locations on the NZ North Island.

It is hoped to use 2 metres as the main propagation indicator, and then move up the bands as propagation/conditions permit. The group will have internet access, and will use the VKlogger

as the main method of liasion. Operation will be SSB, CW and where possible Digital modes for Meteor Scatter and Tropo paths.

6 Metres will be part of the operation, and we are hoping for opportunities on the "magic band" in all directions. As this is the main Sporadic E season, anything is possible. We will have HF capabilities, but these will be limited as VHF,UHF and Microwaves are our prime focus.

The group is excited about this venture, and we hope we receive support from VK and ZL operators to make it worthwhile.

The group will post updates closer to the time.

How to Lock Your Car and Why - Not a Joke!

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times .. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away.. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening....

While travelling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase.....you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device..

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen. This is very real.

Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code....and whatever was in our car.
