Hi Danny,
There is much ongoing development of xfbb by Bernard, F6BVP, and current
releases are stable.
It is strongly recommended, however, that you compile fbb from sources in
order to have a current version. Most packaged version lag behind current
development. Bernard has a lot of useful documentation and source files on
his web site - http://f6bvp.org/
The fpac mini-Howto is particularly useful if you intend compiling kernel
ax25 and xfbb.
Of the group regularly using xfbb and contributing to beta testing,
Bernard uses Mandriva Linux, whilst most others are using Ubuntu or
Kubuntu, or Debian. All of those distributions are easy to install. You
might want to consider subscribing to the xfbb mailing list. Have a look
on f6fbb.org for details.
There is an x-windows client for xfbb that is similar in appearance to the
Winfbb client, although it lacks some of the functionality of the Winfbb
client. I haven't used the x-windows client for ten years. I run a Winfbb
client on my Windows machine and connect to xfbb across my LAN to the
Linux machine which runs the xfbb daemon.
Misko Skoric YT7MPB has also produced a howto for fbb, using the same
configuration files across Linux and Windows. http://tldp.org/HOWTO/FBB.htm
